Will Wolfe (Oswego East – 2020)
PrepHoops’ 18th-ranked prospect for the class of 2020 is as smooth as a shooter as I saw on Sunday. He was a skilled ball-handler with good court vision. He’s a solid low-to-mid-major prospect with his skill set that he will have an opportunity to showcase against tougher high school competition as he transferred from Aurora Christian to Oswego East.
Wolfe has offers from Presbyterian and Indiana Wesleyan (D2), according to this Twitter page.
Christian Shumate (Bloom – 2020)
The 6-foot-5 wing was impressive with his high-flying ability. Everybody in the gym stopped in awe of his one-handed alley-oop that he went above the backboard to reach and throw down. Beyond his display of athleticism, he shot the ball well and got himself in great rebounding positions on both ends of the floor.
He has offers from Chicago State, Detroit, Grambling State, Southern Utah and Lewis University (D2), according to Verbal Commits. He’s rated 20th in PrepHoops’ Class of 2020 rankings.
Jayden Johnson (Batavia – 2020)
Johnson showed the highest basketball IQ of any player on the court in his game in front of me. He communicated well while playing off the ball and showed how smart he is. With the ball in his hands, he scored at all three levels, showing quickness and strength to get to the tin. He also hit several contested jumpers on pull-up, mid-range shots and from the perimeter.
Johnson is ranked 14th in the Class of 2020 by PrepHoops. He’s holds offers from Lewis University and Southern Illinois University, according to Verbal Commits.
Brian Mathews (DePaul Prep – 2021)
The 6-foot-9 center played twice in front of me. The first game he was screening well and a factor defensively. He deters opponents from driving to the rim when he’s around with his size and strength, which made him a force on the offensive and defensive glass. It wasn’t until the second game that he was more active offensively. He showed good court awareness cutting to through the lane after a guard got pinned in a double team along the baseline, leading to an easy layup. His footwork on the block was solid as he gave himself good scoring opportunities.
He’s ranked 26th overall and as the No. 3 center in Illinois by PrepHoops. He has an offer from Chicago State, according to Verbal Commits.
Tommie Williams (Belleville West – 2021)
Admittedly, I’ve been on the Tommie Williams bandwagon since Belleville West’s Supersectional last year, when I covered the Maroons state championship run over the next week. He was a factor off the bench as a 6-foot-3 guard that could slash through the lane and make plays in transition, the same skills he showcased on Sunday. He looked comfortable with the ball i his hands and didn’t force any shots. He’s ranked 28th in the Class of 2021 by PrepHoops.
