It was an event that had plenty of returning faces but what really stood out was the new faces that made stood out from not only Colorado but other states as well. In the article we take at some of those out of state prospects that came to the event and impressed.
Christian Mickelson – Laramie (Wyoming) – 2021
Mickelson came to the event and had one of the purest jumpers out of anybody at the event. He has a nice shooting stroke with great range and can light it up and that was on display. He knocked down multiple shots and when that started opening up the offense he made sure to make the defenders pay by getting into the paint as well. He is a combo-guard that is an irritant to the defense as his ability to shoot the ball keeps the defense guessing on if he is going to shoot it or attack. He also has great court vision and had some dishes for easy baskets that not even his teammates were ready for. For a young player with his size already he has a leg up on the competition and a solid day of shooting helped him standout on the day as a player not from Colorado that is worth taking a look at.
Gavin Harris –Saint Amant — Louisiana — 2021
Harris came, he saw, he dominated. Harris was one of the quicker guards on the day that had some of the most impressive plays on the day. One play that stands out was after going on a 6-0 run himself with finishes at the rim he went baseline and had a teammate cut down the middle of the lane, instead of finishing he hit his teammate with a no look over the shoulder wrap around pass that left the defender confused. Colleges coaches were asking about his play on the day and to their surprise he is only heading into his junior season as he has a polished game and had chemistry with his teammates despite scoring at will. He defended well as an on-ball defender and also showed off a bit of athleticism with some finishes at the rim in which he probably could have threw some down. He had a solid outing and is a player that will surely rise up the Louisiana ranks if he takes that play into their season.
Destin Barker – St. Amant (Louisiana) –2020
Barker was the player to watch of the day. He brought it in every single game and had plenty of schools checking in to ask about him, thing was we had no idea who he was heading into the event. We know now. Barker is a big man out of Louisiana that affects the game on both sides of the floor. There were dunks, there was blocks, there were acrobatic finishes at the rim and he also did not back down to a single player at the event. Barker not only stood out for the out of state performers but was unarguably the best player on the day. He will also be on our standouts list for the entire event. St. Amant got themselves quite the player.
Wesley Fields – Saint Michael — Louisiana –2022
Fields stood out as one of the better guards on the younger court as he pushed the pace with great speed and a quick first step, got to the rim and finished above taller defenders and also got off a few floaters. He is a creative finisher that stayed on the attack and not only was his offense causing havoc on the defense but he was also defending at a high level. He got a few steals, deflected a few passes and also got back on defense. He is a guard to watch and his time in Colorado was well served.
Nathanial Talich – Central High School (Wyoming)
This was my second time seeing combo guard Talich and it is hard not to like what he has to offer. He is an all-around player that does so many things well. He has good size for a player that young and he is strong. He is an athletic guard that does not make many mistakes and he runs the offense. He moves well without the ball, he finds the open man and when the ball is swung to him he puts himself in positions to score. At the event he was able to showcase his two-way abilities as well. He got a few steals, pressed up on defenders and beat them to spots and knew what to do in help side situations. Talich is a player to watch moving forward as he is only going to the smarter and stronger and already has the skill to take over.
