It was an event that had plenty of returning faces but what really stood out was the new faces that made stood out from not only Colorado but other states as well. In the article we take a look at some of the best big men on the day and the interesting part is heading into the event we did not know much about any of them so it was entertaining to see them step up on the day. Here are five bigs from the 2021 class that stood out.
Brayden Carter – Mullen – 2021
Carter was one of the few bigs that was also able to knock down shots on the perimeter as well. His ability to shoot the ball caused problems for the defense as they had to move around a bit more. This floor spacer got the offense going, rebounded and started the offense with a couple of coast to coast finishes and finished with both hands at the rim. On defense he also was able to defend the other bigs and did not back down to challenges. Great day for him.
Greg Gerhardt – Monarch – 2021
Gebhardt was the tallest player at the event with the biggest question mark heading in and he surely made a believer out of me as he was excellent alongside Baye Fall for the event. He played up to his size and rebounded well in bunches. He played a ton of big-to-big action which caused plenty of mismatches and also helped defend on the interior. I was thrilled to see the both play in this kind of dynamic duo at that size as he will have to get accustomed to that, especially at the next level. Gebhardt was one of the better players at the event and not only did he jump on our radars but onto the scene as a player to be taken seriously.
Gino Corridori – Dakota Ridge – 2021
Corridori is a big man standout that did well at the event due to his ability to alter the game from down low. He did not get out of his role, did not try and do things that he is not comfortable with and that led to his team going on big runs. He was not selfish, he battled and made the right plays off of the rebound. He was a great outlet passer, set solid screens and when he was on the court there was fluid motion on offense as he is a traditional big that can score inside as well as rotate the ball well. Corridori had a solid outing and is a player to watch moving forward.
Aaron Jacobs – Chaparral
Jacobs is a player that we are familiar with and he did his usual things. Scored from both inside and out, despite being one of the taller players. Put the ball on the floor and got the rim and finished and also showed off his versatility as a playmaker. What I enjoyed at the event from Jacobs this time was his work on the defensive end. This was the first time that I seen Jacobs stepping up on that end of the floor as he went after multiple shots. He got a few blocks and challenged guys at the rim and when a player got the best of him on a play he made it a point to defend that player for the rest of the game and lock in. That is the type of things that coaches will love about Jacobs. He steps up to the challenge and is able to do so many things which makes him a unique player.
Keegan Phillips – Douglas County – 2021
Phillips was a standout because he showed that he is a versatile big man that spaces the floor as well as goes inside and gets to the lane for baskets. Phillips was not a player that took a ton of shots on the day but was very efficient when he did and made the right plays. He passed from the block, competed on both ends of the floor and things came easy for him as he rebounded and started the break a few times. New face that showed a ton.
