First off, it was an event that had plenty of returning faces but what really stood out was the new faces that made stood out from not only Colorado but other states as well. In the article we take a look at some of the best shooters on the day, there were aplenty but these were the best that I saw on the day. These players were knocking down shots for the entire day and keeping their teams in the game.
Eric Karnisovas – Valor Christian – 2020
Karnisovas was a player I wanted to get a look at coming in as he was a player that was on JV last year so I wanted to see how he progressed since the season. He stepped in and did just that as he found open spots on the floor and made the defense play. He did not have to do too much but he did make sure to get to where he felt comfortable and get his shot off for a smooth shooting stroke. I was interested to see how he would play in this setting and he did not turn down shots which only forced the defense to have to adjust and find him and he made the quick decisions to either shoot it or get rid of it for the open man. This was definitely a stock boosting event for him as he jumps onto our radars and what makes him even more dangerous is he also a terrific scholar as he had one of the top ACT scores at the entire event. He is talented and smart and schools should be looking for him to help their program, hopefully he can take this momentum into a critical senior season for himself at Valor.
Barrington Black II – DSST Green Valley – 2021
Black II made a splash onto the scene this weekend and was a player that we were excited to have gotten to see in person as I will go on record to say he was the best shooter on the entire day as he was lights out from beyond the arc. Looking at his stats from last season, there was either progression made on that end or he just had himself quite the day. Nonetheless, he made sure to get in the right spots and he had a run in a game where he hit multiple shots from deep. When he was not getting shots up he was causing problems for the defense with his speed and getting to the rim which made it difficult to stay in front of him. He is a light out type of player that can get going at any time and I would like to see him keep that up this year as we expect to hear a ton about him this upcoming season. If he plays like he did at the expo for DSST Green Valley, watch out.
Peyton Westfall – Pine Creek – 2020
At this event Westfall did what he best, lit it up from beyond the arc. This was a standout weekend for Westfall as he was able to show that despite him being a very good shooter that he can also score in other ways as well. There was a time that Westfall went for six straight points inside and then capped it off with a three-pointer with a defender in his face. To give his group the lead. He also was able to get it going on defense as well which added to his day. Westfall was one of the best scorers on the day and his shot was able to free him up to do other things as well. Solid outing.
Kameron Butler – Rock Canyon – 2021
Butler lit it up and showed extreme confidence from beyond the arc at the expo. He came off of screens ready to shoot, made the right steps to free himself on the perimeter and was able to knock down multiple shots where the defense had to keep a defender on him. Butler began the day turning down shots but as the day rolled on he started to get himself going which made him standout more. Butler is now on my radar.
Ilan Marinoff – Frederick — 2021
Marinoff was a player that did a few things at the expo that stood out at the expo like his defense and hustle but what really stood out was his gravity. Marinoff was able to find open spots on broken plays which led to him knocking down a couple of corner three-pointers. After the defense keyed in on him he was smart enough to keep bringing the defense to him which opened things up for the offense. He moved well without the ball, had a fluid shooting stroke and due to him knocking down shots early kept on shooting the ball when it came to him. Marinoff is an interesting prospect to look at moving forward as I want to see if his game will translate this year from showcase to season.
Tanner Holtman – Grandview – 2020
Holtman had himself quite the day as he shot up the leader board of players to watch. He scored the ball from all-three levels, he got himself open and when the ball was swung around to him he knocked down the open shots. In the midst of Holtman going on scoring routes he made sure to still make the right play which led to open shots for himself as well. Holtman has good size and can see over smaller defenders and also is not afraid to let it fly even with a defender in his face. What I enjoy about his game is his ability to switch it up. Grandview will need versatility this season and if Holtman goes in with that same confidence he showed this weekend he will most definitely be a part of the rotation.
