First off, it was an event that had plenty of returning faces but what really stood out was the new faces that made stood out from not only Colorado but Louisiana and Wyoming as well. In the first article from this past weekend we focus on the top guards on the day from the 2021 class.
Ben Bowen – Mountain Vista – 2021
Bowen stands out because he is one of the taller point guards. He is a 6’3 guard but has great vision and controls the pace. At the event he made some quick decisions, got to his spots and also shot the ball when he was open. What I like about Bowen’s game is his ability to score from the guard spot. He does not turn down shots and he has a nice handle for a player that size that gets what he wants on smaller defenders. Good day for him.
Jaylen Carrizales – Vista Peak – 2021
Carrizales is a player that I did not know a ton about heading into the event but caught my eye from the opening game. He shot the ball well, he ran the offense and got the offense flowing and he finished at the rim. Carrizales was aggressive offensively which allowed his unit to start scoring, he is an offensive kick starter and played with a ton of energy.
Tori Apodaca – Lutheran – 2021
Apodoca is a guard to watch moving forward as he is a tenacious defender that plays on both sides of the floor. He is aggressive defensively which opened things up for him on offense and he gets others involved. At the event he was unselfish and that became contagious as he had a fun team that played well together. He created mismatches with his speed and attacked it to get whatever he wanted. Going to be interesting to see this Lutheran team next year as they will be one of the most complete teams in the state next year with Apodaca heading them.
Henos Fitwi – Denver South – 2021
Fitwi was one of the quicker guards on the day. He made the right plays and did not force much which doesn’t typically happen at a showcase. He shot the ball well and finished at the rim and what really stood out was his control. He made smart plays and attacked to score which either ended up with the right pass or getting to the free throw line as defenders could not stay in front of him. Fitwi understood where his guys should be and made solid plays. I will also go on to say that he had the best handles at the entire event.
Tyler Uyemera – Platte Valley
Uyemera was one of the most interesting players to watch at the event. He passed the ball well, he kept defenders on their toes with his speed and was constantly on the attack. Uyemera made good passes and had multiple steals that turned into fast break points. He also showed a good change of pace game that the other guards at the event did not have. He was the leader for the bunch and kept games competitive. Solid event for the guard from Platte Valley.
