The event featured some of the top talent in the Southern California area from the classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and even 2024. Each class played a set of two games, one featuring top 40 players of the class, and a second featuring top 20 players of the class.
I arrived at the showcase for the start of the game featuring top 40 players for the class of 2022. Here’s a look at some of the top 2022 standouts from Game 2.
1. Ben Shtolzberg – Notre Dame Sherman Oaks
Shtolzberg has all the makings of becoming a lethal combo guard. For a young player, he has some advanced offensive moves in terms of being able to get to where he wants to go on the court. He’s very quick and decisive when making a play off the dribble. He doesn’t take too many dribbles, three or less to make a move. When he attacks the rim, he has a nice floater, and he has good body control. Great passer in the halfcourt. He shoots well from three too.
2. Benny Gealer – Rolling Hills Prep
When I first saw Gealer back in May, he stood out as a knockdown shooter from three-point range. He still is a great shooter who can’t be left open or else that’s an automatic bucket. But he has also improved on his off the dribble game. He can slash to the rim and draw contact to get himself to the free-throw line. He’s also a very good defender on the perimeter. He’s poised to have himself a big sophomore season.
3. Isaac Peralta – JSerra San Juan Capistrano
Peralta is a small guard, but he is quite an explosive scorer who plays bigger than his size. He’s also a sneaky athletic player and very aggressive on the offensive end. He’s a good shooter from both midrange and the three-point line. But a big part of what makes his game so effective is that he is active and constantly moving. He’s never stationary and he runs the floor well in transition. He works extremely hard on the court and makes solid hustle plays. His development as a combo guard is one to watch out for.
4. Barrington Hargress – Ribet Academy
Hargress is also a smaller guard, but don’t let that fool you. He is incredibly strong and tough and very crafty with the ball in his hands. He is able to easily create his own shot whether that’s making a move to the rim or getting a good look on the perimeter. His slashing game though is where he excels. He’s very quick when beating his defender off the dribble and aggressive in attacking the rim. Once he gets to the rim, he can easily finish around defenders. His footwork around the rim is solid too.
5. Dane Persek – Mater Dei
Dane, like his twin brother Austin, is a very fundamentally sound and versatile player. As a big man, he too can handle the ball if need be and makes plays going to the rim. He also has solid range for a big man out to the three-point line. He can also score in the post where he has great footwork and is aggressive and decisive when catching the ball in the paint. He is a good rebounder and is constantly fighting on the glass to secure misses. Decent defender in the post as well.
