Key Losses: Phillip Burwell, Collin Lewis, Isaiah Lewis
The Wildcats lost their floor general, leading scorer and energy guy in Phillip Burwell, who will be difficult to replace. He posted 15.3 points, 5.3 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Collin Lewis was their second-leading scorer with 11.0 points per contest and a top defender that produced 1.4 steals per game. Isaiah Lewis was a role player that put up 8.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.1 steals per game. With those three guards gone, they’ll have a completely new backcourt in 2019-20.
Key Additions: Eric van der Heidjen, Silas Demary Jr., Quaevon Anderson, Chris Daniels
2021 Eric van der Heidjen joins the squad after spending last season at Ravenscroft High School. He brings length, athleticism and more 3-point shooting to the fold, which can really enhance the dynamic for this squad.
2021 Quaevon Anderson is expected to step up and fill the void in the backcourt with his ability to run the floor and get out on the break. He’s still learning how to pick things up on the defensive end and given their style of play, he’s set to emerge as a solid two-way option for them after contributing on JV last season.
2021 Chris Daniels is a combo guard that can score on all three levels and defend at a high level. He’s got nice length for his size at 6-foot-1 and should really do well in the full-court press defense. He contributed on the JV level last season and is due to make waves on varsity.
2022 Silas Demary Jr. is a wild card and the youngest member of the fold but has an advanced game. He can defend, rebound and fill it up when needed, giving them a wild card for this season. He’s liable to steal some minutes from some upperclassmen.
Key Returners: Will Felton, Nolan Dorsey, Jalen McCoy, Zach Miller, Bradley Williams, Sam Hood, Parker Swisher
2021 Will Felton is due for a big season and has already begun to draw some attention from colleges in the area. He holds offers from Elon and Appalachian State already and is set to add on his sophomore season with another big year in the paint. He’s a strong, aggressive big man that’s a burden to bear in the paint.
2020s Nolan Dorsey, Jalen McCoy and Sam Hood are set to have strong seasons as well. Dorsey’s stock has grown this summer as he holds offers from High Point, Navy, Niagara, Rider, Air Force and American among a slew of others with his ability to handle the ball and create for himself and his teammates.
McCoy is another rising prospect drawing interest from the likes of North Carolina A&T, New Hampshire, Citadel, Mount Olive, UNC-Pembroke and St. Andrew’s. He’s an explosive forward at 6-foot-4 that should excel wherever he’s put on the floor this season.
Hood is a mobile forward that can play above the rim and stretch the floor with his outside shot. He’s got a number of Division II offers from Georgia Southwester, Coker and Elizabeth City State.
2020 Zach Miller competes on both ends and harnesses a pure point guard mentality that should fare well alongside Dorsey’s abilities. Miller has a never back down mentality that should allow for him to play a solid role in 2019-20.
2020 Parker Swisher is their sharpshooter that should excel from behind the arc. He’s got nice size at 6-foot-4 and isn’t afraid to play inside. 2020 Bradley Williams should play a role as a key reserve with his ability to shoot and defend.
Outlook
With what they have returning and their additions, Millbrook should have no issue with size. That’s for sure. It will be interesting to see how this team comes together when the season arrives. Right now, they’re a raw group that’s still figuring each other out but given how their head coach Chris Davis operates, Millbrook is set for another long run to the 4A State Title game. Stay tuned.
