This season, they could very easily be the favorites to win the Northern Conference. Here’s a look at some takeaways from their open gym.
Projecting a less top-heavy, deeper team
The Huskies went 6-4 in conference action and 15-12 overall while two sophomores in Red Dunton and Lucas Taylor led the way for them. Entering their junior years, Dunton and Taylor have really begun to hit their stride while others are prepared to step up as well.
Dunton produced 17.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Taylor put up 14.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.1 assists per contest. They’ll be a top duo in 4A to keep eyes on as they continue to draw interest from D1 college programs.
One prospect that I expect to really have a breakout season is 2020 forward Alvin Campbell. He’s a 6-foot-5 player that stretches the floor with his ability to shoot the 3-ball, something he said he’s really improved upon in the offseason. He showed off his shot-making ability on Thursday evening and showed why this team can be much-improved this upcoming season. Campbell is drawing interest from some DII schools as well. So far, he’s heard from Queens University and Lees-McRae.
2020 point guard Tre Waller is another prospect that’s starting to get some looks as well. He had a strong summer on the AAU circuit with Garner Road West and enters ready to have a strong senior season. Waller is a stocky guard that can get to the rim with ease and also knock it down from deep. He’s heard from Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Washington & Lee and Hampden-Sydney.
2020 Kyler Bowden is another guard that should really pick up steam in 2019-20. He’s an aggressive slasher, especially in the pick-and-roll, and crafty off the bounce. Bowden has drawn interest from Mount Olive, Averett, Pfeiffer and Queens University.
More youth, less pressure
There’s still a ton of youth on the roster, but with pieces aligning with their seniors and juniors, there’s less pressure on the sophomores on the roster to produce right away. Don’t be surprised though, if they impress like their predecessors from last season.
2022s Zach Weed, Justin Monden, Evan Ashe and Kaleb Hedgepeth are expected to contribute in big ways. Weed and Hedgepeth are two players in the frontcourt with opportunities to fill the void on the interior. Monden and Ashe are two players to keep eyes on in the backcourt as they’re also efficient 3-point shooters much like the upperclassmen. These four players have a real shot to contribute in meaningful ways, mostly in reserve roles.
The Huskies basketball team has a chance to be scary good with their ability to shoot the 3-pointer and share the ball. They’ve got a lot of gritty guys that get after it on defense and as the season approaches, they’ll only improve as an overall unit. Keep an eye out for Heritage this season.
