They finished tied for first in the regular season with Ravenscroft and made it to the NCISAA 4A State Semifinals before falling to Greensboro Day School. Durham Academy returns two of their top four scorers from last season in 2022 guard M.J. Rice (15.9 ppg) and 2021 guard Cole Sinclair (14.5 ppg) and on Thursday evening, I got a look at their workouts in open gym. M.J. Rice wasn’t in attendance at open gym.
2021 guard Cole Sinclair: Sinclair is a crafty guard off the dribble that can score on all three levels. He’s really improved his body in the weight room and added strength to his frame which allows him to get to the rim and finish with ease. He gets after it on both ends and competes.
2021 guard Brent Randleman: Brent is the brother of Bryant Randleman, who is now at High Point University. The younger Randleman was the best player on the floor during the 4v4 and 5v5 scrimmage portion of the evening. He’s an aggressive slasher that gets to the rim and plays physical on both ends. He’s got nice length on the wing at 6-foot-3.
2021 wing Toby Harris: Harris is a sharpshooter that had a strong summer that’s boosted his confidence drastically. He’s getting to the rim more and learning to use his length at 6-foot-4 on defense to alter shots and be a versatile piece for them.
2022 point guard Nik Graves: Graves is a young point guard that’s learning when to score and when to pass. He can score on all three levels when he’s locked in and is shifty with the ball in his hands. As he learns to be a more vocal leader, he’s a player I expect to really blossom on this squad.
2020 forward Benny Klein: Klein is a glue guy for this squad with his IQ as an aggressive driver and setup man for others. He gets to his spots in the midrange and behind the 3-point line. He’ll be an experienced player in the rotation that will allow them to grow as an overall squad.
2020 guard Chris Chaves: Chaves played sparingly for Durham Academy in 2018-19 but should be a solid reserve for them. He’s got nice vision in the open court and halfcourt. He’s a confident scorer when pushed and is learning to play with pace.
2020 forward Davis Beischer: Beischer is another senior on this squad. He’s a scrappy defender that plays hard. He uses shot fakes and pump fakes to finish strong around the rim. He’ll be another reserve that should see time with his ability to play hard.
2023 center Adam Roeder: Roeder is only a freshman but given his size at 6-foot-6, he’ll be thrown into the fire some in 2019-20. He’s a big man with raw talent and potential. In the post, he’s learning to establish himself and has nice touch on his shot from 15-20 feet.
