1. Brenton Walker, McKinley High School (2021)
It’s tough to miss Walker when he steps onto the court. Standing 6’7″ with an impressive frame, he looks the part of someone that could cause an opposing big some problems. Once the ball is tipped, he’ll confirm that with the way he runs the floor, rebounds the ball, and has his way with opponents in the post. All day long he was commanding double teams, and even saw a third guy start to collapse a couple times when he put the ball on the floor near the basket. Running the lane in transition, getting him the ball meant a dunk virtually every time. The most physically imposing player I saw all day.
2. Kameron Taylor, Spire Institue (2020)
If there’s anyone really took full advantage of playing in front of so many college coaches, it’s Kameron Taylor. In one of the last games of the day, Taylor had a game to remember, scoring on what only seemed to be every time down the floor. What was most impressive was his versatility scoring the ball. Standing 6’3″ with a very thin frame, Taylor proved to be one of the bounciest athletes in the gym. On numerous occasions, Taylor showed a distinct ability to catch in the corner, and quickly drive into a baseline drive. If the defender was late on Taylor’s first step, the defense was in trouble because once he was around the rim, he could out jump just about anyone. More than that, Taylor also showed an ability to score off the dribble, a number of times creating his own shot early in the possession, and he wasn’t shy about showing off his impressive range.
3. Matt Bengel, Mercyhurst Prep (2020)
The first thing I noticed about Bengel was how active he was on the floor at all times. A 6’3″ Guard, Bengel proved to be an excellent passer and seemed to love playing the role of primary playmaker on his team. A countless number of times, Bengel would crash the defensive glass and push the pace to find a player running with him in transition for a finish at the rim or a catch-and-shoot 3. He played with a certain passion that energized his team all day long.
4. Jadakiss Mack, Lima Senior High School (2020)
Perhaps the most athletic and certainly the bounciest player in the gym, Jadakiss Mack was a threat to dunk anytime he got in or near the lane. Mack could have made a whole highlight reel of just dunks from this event, but outside of that, he showed serious flashes of being able to take guys 1-on-1 off the dribble and get the the cup all by himself.
5. Tyreek Crump, Brush High School (2020)
An athletic Point Guard that saw the ball in his hands a lot, Crump proved to be maybe the best 1-on-1 player at the expo. Even as a ball dominant Guard, he showed great decision making ability. Many plays started with breaking down guys on the wing and once he used his superior quickness to get by guys, was able to quickly read the help coming and make the decision to kick out or show off his profound finishing ability around the rim.
