It’s never too early for way-too-early season. With fall sports in full stride and coming up on the midway point, the winter season will be upon us before we know it.
With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top backcourts in Class B:
Richland: Cole Myers, Gain Reiland and Carter Lingen
The Colts are among the three or four favorites to win a state title in basketball and a big reason why is the returning perimeter trio of Meyers, Lingen and Reiland. Myers was the go-to guy for them a year ago, averaging better than 18 points per game and showing a unique ability to score from anywhere on the floor. Reiland is a terrific athlete on the wing and averaged 14 points per game a year ago. He’s a solid shooter and slasher and does a really nice job as a secondary facilitator. Lingen is the glue guy, doubling as a terrific playmaker and spot-up shooter. He averaged more than 12 points and four assists last year.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan: Doug Yankton, Jaeshaun Shaw, Jaymison Green and Jayden Yankton
The Indians return all five starters from a year ago and after looking like a state title contender for most of the year, they’ll be among the favorites this year. The perimeter group they can run at teams is as good as any. It starts with Doug Yankton who is one of the best all-around players in Class B. Jaymison Green is an experienced point guard who defends, pushes the tempo and makes good decisions. Jaeshaun Shaw and Jayden Yankton are double-figure caliber scorers who can play stifling defense, shoot and get to the rim. It’s a complete group that’ll lead FWM to a lot of wins this winter.
St. John: Bradley Defender, Zack Anderson and Tyreece Gunville
The Woodchucks were solid a year ago and should be even better this winter with all five starters back. It’s a perimeter-oriented group led by Bradley Defender and Zach Anderson. Defender is one of the most well-rounded players in Class B and fills up the stat sheet like few guys can. Anderson averaged 15 points per game a year ago and is one of the better shooters in the state. Tyreece Gunville is a solid third scorer on the perimeter and a more-than-capable playmaker on both ends.
Hatton/Northwood: Alex Wolfe, Colton Konschak, Parker Vaagene and Avery Thorsgard
Hatton/Northwood won 17 games a year ago and could be one of the contenders to Hillsboro/Central Valley in Region 2 this upcoming winter. A perimeter core of Alex Wolfe, Avery Thorsgard, Parker Vaagene and Colton Konschak give the Thunder four guys who can change the game. Wolfe is one of the best shooters in the state and can fill it up in a hurry. Konschak is a big guard who is the go-to guy and showed he’s capable of putting up big numbers in his sophomore season.
