Continue ReadingThe All-West Camp at Lynwood HS in Southern California known as the #1 camp on the West Coast had more than 260 participants, and had representation from nine Western state including Alaska. The majority of prospects were from the Las Angeles area. Northern California was well represented with more than 65 prospect who made the trip south. Six Nor Cal prospects were selected for the 3 All-Star games. Here’s My Take on the six.
Jaylen Thompson 6’6 2022, St Joseph’s Notre Dame (Alameda Ca)
This rising prospect served notice that he’s one of Nor Cal’s top 2022 prospects to start the season, and soon to be on the radar of many outside of the state of California. I thought he was a top 5 performer of the camp. He’s is coming along nicely since I first noticed him during his freshman year. He spent the grassroots season playing for Team Arsenal 16u a program out of Oakland Ca. Getting the opportunity to play on the wing, and having added muscle to his 6’6 frame. His game has risen to another level, his handles in the open court, and his ability to create his own shot, and his decision making was on display. He stayed within the flow of the game, didn’t force shots, and made good long, strong passes to teammates. He was a consistent performer all weekend. He played in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 Game.
Jalen Lewis 6’8 2023, Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland Ca)
I had heard there was a good Freshman entering O’Dowd, but hadn’t seen him play with his Team Lillard 15u squad. Jalen got off to a sluggish start in his first camp game, (I watched him play 4 games) It didn’t take him long to adjust and get things going. He showed why he has the potential to be a top prospect from Nor Cal for the next couple of years. At 6’8, he’s big, thick, and aggressive. He moves at a decent pace for now. He started playing with force, being physical, handling the ball in the open court, and going anywhere he wanted to go, in this case to the basket for points. He has 3pt range and will shoot it. He has a bit of a mean streak that will help him and his Bishop O’Dowd teammates in the paint. Played in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 Game.
Jordan Pope 6’2 2022, Prolific Prep (Napa Ca)
I had Pope as one of my top performers for day one action. He looked like one of the top 2022 Nor Cal prospects that he is. Nothing too flashy, but has a certain kind of flair in the way he plays. He can score it multiple ways, and his ability to pass and find teammates is underrated, as he found teammates with nice( wow) passes. He showed his range by knocking down long 3’s with some consistency. Selected to play in the Cream of the Crop Top 30 Game.
Varrick Lewis 6’3 2023, Monterey Trail (Elk Grove Ca)
I didn’t notice this prospect until Sundays games. I was watching court 2, he was on court 3. I glanced over and saw him knock down a 3pt shot with good shooting form, the next time down he did it again 2 in a row. He’s got a good body, he runs the floor with a purpose in transition to either spot up on the wings for a 3 or take it strong to the basket. In the half court he is always ready to shoot or attack, he did both with some consistency. He played his way into the Cream of the Crop Top 30 Game. I will see more of him.
Joaquin Battle 5’8 2023, Salesian Prep (Richmond Ca)
Battle is always in attack mode. He looks to push the ball at every opportunity, looking for his mid range pull up jumper that was consistent all weekend. When 5’8 fast point guards are always moving it’s hard to keep track of where they might end up. He did a good job of creating openings for himself and teammates on the drive. He hit 3’s in the corner with some consistency. He was selected for the Final 20 Game.
Trey Knight 5’11 2022, Moreau Catholic (Hayward Ca)
A solid prospect with a strong body. He showed good patience while looking for his spots to attack. He can settle the offense, that’s not a easy thing to do in these type of settings. He works well in half-court sets, uses the pick-and-roll. Most likely he’s a pass first point guard, but was effective at breaking down the defender and creating opportunities for himself and teammate. He too played in the Final 20 Game.
