202 high school prospects (2020-2023) competed at a high level at Daytona Mainland where 20 plus college coaches, 15 plus media companies and a plethora of parents and family taking in the action.
We will have coverage all week long about the event.
Here is a look at the first of the three-part New Names We Learned series.
Joshua Symonette (Rickards)
A superb athlete and a long tweener who can play guard and forward, 2021 6’4″ Rickards forward Joshua Symonette had a nice showing in Daytona. He can hurt you in a variety of ways, especially as a core defender who loves to dig deep and block shots. Symonette has endless upside and can stand to add muscle and more aggressiveness offensively.
Jayvyn Thomas (Lake Minneola)
The shooting ability from 2023 6’2″ Lake Minneola guard Jayvyn Thomas is reliable. He was stretching the floor often with his jumper and quite frankly was a very confident young player. His positioning is wise as he gets up a shot quick and isn’t afraid to square up to anyone. Thomas has a chance to be a big factor for Lake Minneola right out of the gates.
Antonio Rizzo (St. Francis Catholic)
Dunking with two hands quite a bit on the day, 2021 6’5″ St. Francis Catholic forward Antonio Rizzo was a pleasant surprise. He’s a deceiving athlete who really contains guys defensively with his size and confidence and his offensive prowess is there. Rizzo is just starting to hit his stride as a true leader.
Donovan Mcintosh (Tohopekaliga)
Another 2021 prospect that was very lively was 6’4″ Tohopekaliga guard/forward Donovan Mcintosh. Coming from a first year program in Kissimmee, the Tigers only won two games a season ago, but it is quite evident that things will get easier with another year of experience. Mcintosh has all the tools that you look for in a two-way player as he can attack, hit a shot in stride and get back on defense to battle.
Marcellus Thomas (Kathleen )
Not necessarily a new name, but more of a big improvement overall is 2021 6’3″ Kathleen guard Marcellus Thomas. It has been a while since I’ve seen him play and it looks like he has gotten a whole lot better. Thomas has endless burst, jumping ability and energy and all of those traits were quite evident on Sunday. He was getting up and down the floor with ease, finishing with dunks and lay-ins and seems to never be tired.
