Luke Kasubke, a 6’5″ standout wing from Chaminade College Prep, gave a verbal commitment to Kansas State. Point guard Rashad Weekly-McDaniels of Trinity Catholic committed to Central Michigan while point guard Phillip Russell of Vashon gave a pledge to Vashon.
Kasubke chose Kansas State over Saint Louis University and Loyola of Chicago. He has been one of the top perimeter shooters in the state throughout his career. As a junior at Chaminade, he averaged 22 points, four rebounds and three assists a game while making 69 3-pointers and shooting 38 percent from long distance.
During the summer, Kasubke was a starting wing player for the MoKan Elite 17U team that won the championship at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C. Kasubke averaged 12 points a game during EYBL regular season play and scored 13 points in the championship game victory over Team WhyNot.
McDaniels, a thick-bodied 6’0″ point guard, chose Central Michigan over Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Western Illinois. As a junior, he averaged 10 points, three rebounds and three assists in helping the Titans to a 25-4 record and a berth in the quarterfinals of the Class 3 state tournament.
McDaniels enjoyed a big breakout performance last season when he erupted for 26 points in a one-point loss to Vashon at the Vashon Mid-Winter Classic in February in front of a packed house. He spent the summer playing for the SW IL Jets 17U in the Recruit Looks League. After losing nearly 20 pounds, McDaniels had a big summer with the Jets as he was one of the top guards on the circuit.
The 5’11” Russell will be entering his third season as the starting point guard at Vashon. As a junior, he averaged 13 points a game in helping the Wolverines to the Class 3 state championship. An excellent perimeter shooter, Russell enjoyed a big postseason run on the way to the state championship. Russell scored a game-high 25 points in the Wolverines victory over Cardinal Ritter in the district championship game. He scored 20 points against Charleston in the Class 3 state semifinals and 17 points in Vashon’s 69-59 victory over Springfield Catholic in the state championship game. Russell spent his summer playing with the Brad Beal Elite 17U squad that competed in the Nike EYBL.
