Recently I had a chance to visit Rancho High and Head Basketball Coach Kei Childress during one of their preseason workouts. In his first full year, he has his young team poised to improve on last year’s 6-21 record. While they’re losing their leading scorer from last season, they have a ton of returning talent. In addition, they also have several newcomers who should add depth to the squad. In this article PH takes a look at some of the top players for the 2019- 20 Rancho Rams.
Head Coach:
Kei Childress 2nd Season
Conference: 4A Mountain
Key Returners:
Freddy Vargas 6’0 SG 2022 – Vargas is a knock down shooter. He has a textbook release and shoots it effortlessly from the 3 point line. He has great foot speed, and is able to make plays for his teammates. Last year as a freshmen Vargas averaged nearly 6ppg to go along with 3 rebounds.
Jimar Mitchell 6’0 SG 2022 – Mitchell is another one of the young players that is expected to contribute. He is a good competitor that plays with a fabulous motor. He’s a combo guard that can create a shot for himself off the drive. High IQ, good passer, he and Vargas should form a formidable backcourt. Mitchell list helping the team win and getting better as his main season goals.
Ta’Quawn-Dillon –Hodges 6’0 SG 2021 – Hodges really impressed on the grassroots season this summer. He is a strong physical guard that likes to get into the lane. Perhaps not considered a shooter, however he can knock down shots when left open. TDH is the leading returning scorer, and one of the most productive returners in the conference. He averaged 8ppg to go along with nearly 6rpg last season.
Brandon Enriquez 6’5 PF 2022 – Enriquez is a talented big in a city lacking them. He has a soft touch around the rim, and is a decent athlete. A lot of Rancho’s success this year will depend on his ability protect the rim. He showed flashes of it last year in route to averaging just under a block per game in limited minutes.
Kei Childress Jr 6’1 SG 2022 – Childress is a High IQ player with a good looking jump shot. At 6’1 he has good size to play both backcourt positions effectively. He earned valuable minutes last year as a freshmen
Key Newcomers:
Diego White 6’8 PF 2021 – White played JV for the school last year. The young forward started playing basketball less than 3 years ago He is expected to add size and rim protection for the team.
Top Prospect: Diego White 6-8 PF 2021 – Walk into the any gym and White is going to stand out. He is a physical specimen with freakishly long arms and hands. In the famous words of Fran Frachilla he’s 2 years away from being 2 years away. He’s still extremely raw and needs to improve his hand eye coordination, however he’s a decent athlete and plays with a passion, and has a willingness to improve.
