Continue ReadingIn his 10 season at the helm, Coach Jack Tarango has seen the ups and downs. After an 12-14 record two seasons ago, Legacy rebounded to a 16-11 record including 8-4 in the conference. They return their top two scorers as well as several newcomers expected to contribute right away. In this article PH takes a look at some of the key players for the Legacy Longhorns.
Head Coach:
Jack Tarango 10th Season
Conference: 4A Mountain
Key Returners:
Emmanuel “Mooch” Austin 6’0 SG 2021 (PHN #11 2021) –If you follow PHN then you already know Mooch is one of my favorite players in the state. Hard nose, next play scoring guard. Old school throwback game. Austin won’t kill you from 3, however his mid-range game is deadly. Intelligent scorer who understands angles, spacing and is decisive with his decision making.
Andrew Garcia 5’11 SG 2021 (PHN #16 2021) – Garcia and Austin are a formidable backcourt. The smooth lefty is the perfect complement. Creative scorer who loves to attack P&R’s. Garcia moves well without the ball, especially when coming off screens. He led the team in scoring last season and is poised for another big year.
Jordan Jeffries 6’2 SG 2020 – Jeffries is literally a legacy at Legacy. His two older brothers Timothy and David both played for Coach Tarango and went on to play college ball. A powerfully built guard, Jeffries can play the 1 or the 2, and counts “Being a good teammate” as one of his main goals this year. May be the best pure athlete on the team. If he can get going, expect Legacy to have one of the most explosive trio’s in the conference.
Key Newcomers:
Amar Smith 5’11 PG 2021 – Smith is a great pickup for the Longhorns. The Democracy Prep transfer provides immediate ballhandling and leadership. Slasher with paint touch ability. In the Longhorns 5 out up tempo style Smith’s ability to protect the ball, and get teammates involved will be key.
Faizon Woods 5’10 PG 2020 – Woods is a physical defensive guard. The Chicago native provides grit and toughness to the squad. Quick feet, and a low center of gravity, Woods is excellent in pressure defense situations. Woods is a confident player that feels as if his best work comes in the clutch.
Corbin Dagons 6’4 PF 2022 – Dagons is a young player with a ton of potential. A stretch 4 Dagons provides size and shooting to a team that desperately needs it. He’s still raw, but Dagons has a nice shot and could provide much needed floor spacing.
Top Prospect: Emmanuel “Mooch” Austin 6’0 SG 2021 (PHN #11 2021) – Austin is a natural scorer. His Nevada H2G squad is a member of the Prep Hoops Hustle Region circuit, so I had a chance to see him play a lot this summer. Awesome offensive weapon. Austin excels at creating his own shot. In order to reach his full potential he’s going to have to transition to the 1, however he has two years and a veteran coaching staff to help him.
