Nevada C/O 2022 Breakdown: Breakout Players
In the landscape of prep basketball the sophomore year is extremely important. Those that were freshmen usually show a jump in production, while many players will be seeing their first significant varsity minutes. It’s in that 2nd season that players begin building their basketball resume. By the time a player completes their 2nd H.S season most talent evaluators are going to have a good indication about their strengths and weaknesses. In this article PH takes a look at some 2022 players poised for a breakout year.
Shane Thomas 6’2 SG Centennial – 3 and D guy. Thomas is a lethal lefty that can get hot in a minute. Makes multiple 3’s a game. Had a huge 7 3 pointer outburst this summer during the fantastic 40, as he helped lead the Las Vegas Knicks to the championship game. Excited to see him in his role at Centennial where he should be able to stretch the floor and provide perimeter defense instantly.
Tavointe Jackson 5’7 PG Las Vegas – Jackson is poised to go off this year. Perfect situation, he’s going to have the ball in his hand and the opportunity to make plays. Add in the fact that he can flat out play, and you have the makings of a breakout season. Jitterbug PG that gets to the rim. Solid shooter that forces defenders to play him honestly.
Jamir Stephens 6’0 PG Desert Pines –Stephens had an outstanding summer. He averaged over 14ppg playing against mostly 17U competition for the Las Vegas Olympians. Transition finisher that runs the floor well. He’s a two way player that is comfortable playing off and on the ball. DP is expected to be one of the contenders in the state this year, so I can’t wait to watch him perform in big game situations.
Fredy Vargas 6’0 SG Rancho – The more I see of Vargas, the more I’m convinced he’s an undervalued prospect. Don’t be shocked to see him put up monster numbers this season. Dangerous shooter, with good quickness. Vargas has added playmaking ability to his skill – set, which should create opportunities for other scorers on the Rancho team.
Joshua Jefferson 6’7 PF Liberty – Jefferson has been the most talked about sophomore in town. The 6’7 forward has enormous upside. Playing alongside PHN #2 C/O 2020 Wing Julian Strawther, should provide excellent opportunity for Jefferson to get his feet. Plays primarily 15 feet and in, however he has an advanced post skill – set and is a good athlete. Strawther will clearly be the focus of every defense, expect Jefferson to score off putbacks, transition buckets and direct post ups.
Jimar Mitchell 6’0 SG Rancho– Mitchell is going to have an opportunity this year. Tough, competitive guard that can get to the rim. Good shooter, I can see a scenarios where he produces in both a lead player and 2nd option role.
