1.) Noah Beck, BGM Brooklyn (182 assists)
Beck, listed at just 5-5, is tiny, but incredibly productive for BGM. His 182 assists are tied for the most among returnees in the state, regardless of class (Madrid’s Braden Gibbons in 2A), and he’s a dominant two-way threat, as his 155 steals led the state by 30 last year.
2.) Jack Franey, Martensdale-St. Mary’s (126 assists)
The straw that stirs the drink for a Blue Devils team that we have ranked #5 in the class to start the season, Franey posted an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of 126-44 last year.
3.) Cade Jargo, Easton Valley (123 assists)
Jargo was the lead ball handler of a group that took tremendous care of the ball last year (444 assists to 188 turnovers; Jargo was 123-49), and the leader of one of the state’s most potent offenses. In addition to his passing and decision making prowess, he made 55 3-pointers at a 44.7% clip last year.
4.) Cedrick Drahn, MFL-Mar-Mac (122 assists)
Drahn could see his assist numbers spike upward again this year on a Bulldogs roster that returns their top four scorers from last year.
5.) Keegan Edwards, Lone Tree (117 assists)
A versatile 6-2 guard, Edwards led the Lions in every major statistical category except for blocks, where he ranked third.
6.) Colby Groe, Lake Mills (113 assists)
A 5-11 lead guard, Groe isn’t much of a scoring threat (averaged just 4.6 points a game last year), but he takes care of the ball (113-47 assist-to-turnover), and will pace a Lake Mills team that we have ranked #1 in 1A to open the year.
Trey Shearer
7.) Trey Shearer, Montezuma (109 assists)
The best player in 1A, Shearer is not only a remarkable passing threat, he’s also one of the best scorers in the state. A talented, shifty 6-0 lead guard, the junior ended his recruitment early and committed to play Division II ball at Truman State.
8.) Taurice Grant, Meskwaki Settlement (108 assists)
Grant also led the Warriors in steals last season with 54.
9.) Andrew Holtz, Maquoketa Valley (107 assists)
In addition to leading the team in assists, Holtz also led them in scoring last season at 10.4 points a game. If he can clean up the turnovers (110 last year), he could have a big-time year for the Wildcats.
Hunter Caves
t10.) Hunter Caves, Alburnett (104 assists)
A tough, physical 6-0 junior guard, Caves was one of the standout performers at the 1A state tournament last season, helping lead the Pirates to a surprise runner-up finish. Like Holtz, if he can clean up the turnovers (113), he could have a huge year for Alburnett.
t10.) Parker Rochford, Edgewood-Colesburg (104 assists)
In addition to his passing abilities, Rochford is also a big-time scorer who averaged 20.5 points a game last year as a sophomore and led the team with 83 steals.
