We’re still 6 weeks away from the official start of basketball practice in Kentucky but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to look ahead to what should be a terrific 2019-2020 season. Here’s a look at the best trios in Kentucky this season.
Male’s Howard Fleming, Tyren Moore and Noah Courtney – Howard, Noah and Tyren all have multiple scholarship offers already and combine to lead the preseason top team in the state. The three should combine for around 45 points per game in their Senior season. The crazy thing is that fellow Senior Jake Evans and freshman Kaleb Glenn could easily be included in this list. You won’t see many better starting fives in the state this season.
John Hardin’s Alex Matthews, Preston Murrell and Trevon Harris – Another Senior trio that is hoping to end their careers at Rupp Arena, these Bulldogs have been to state the last two seasons and are working towards a third. Trevon does a little bit of everything for his team while Preston patrols the paint and Alex is the go to scorer and one of the best rebounders in Kentucky. As long as the guards can step up for John Hardin, they should be the best team in the 5th region this year.
Butler’s Trey Minter, Cam Underwood and Turrell Cleaves Jr. – Minter and Underwood have been starters for Coach Goodin’s team for a while but the 2022 class at Butler is loaded and Cleaves has the upside to be one of the best in the state in that class. Underwood has become one of the most consistent 2020s in Louisville and Minter is among the best shooters in the class with the ability to get hot and stay hot. Don’t be surprised if the Bears are in the hunt for Rupp again this year.
Fern Creek’s Darrius Washington, Jaden Rogers and Zek Montgomery – One of the biggest hurdles for Butler to get to Rupp will be Fern Creek. The reason they’re so highly touted is the Tigers loaded Junior class. Washington has an offer from Morehead State and Rogers has offers from Morehead and Miami (OH). Montgomery could have the most upside of the trio even though he doesn’t have an offer (yet). Don’t sleep on the other members of the Fern Creek rotation either. Underclassmen like Darian Lewis and Andru Markham could have big seasons this year.
Bowling Green’s Isaiah Mason, Turner Buttry and Trace Flanary – Another team who has really quality depth (and they’re all underclassmen), you could include Jacobi Huddleston or Conner Cooper on this list in place of any of the other three and the group would still be accurate. Buttry and Flanary are consistent weapons for a Purples team while Mason is a rising star in Western Kentucky and could make the jump to being a high major player this season if he becomes the aggressive player he has shown flashes of before.
Paintsville’s Colby Fugate, Seth Williams and Nick Keeton – Because they’re in the mountains, the Paintsville program doesn’t get the respect they have deserved as these young players have developed over the last few seasons. All three of this group add some strength to this team as Fugate has become a go to scorer, Williams is the leader and Keeton is one of the best rebounders in the state even though he’s only 6’3. Don’t sleep on the Tigers this season.
