John A Logan is annually one of the top junior college programs and this year might be their best roster yet. It is led by the #1 JUCO prospect nationally Jay Scrubb, but there is a lot more talent to this squad. Here is what we saw from the Volunteers!
SG Jay Scrubb (Sophomore)
Scrubb is the premier junior college prospect in recent memory. At 6’6” he has excellent size on the wing for a two guard. He is a high level athlete with skill. Complete two guard! Early on in the practice we was a little loose with his handles getting it stripped a couple times. As the scrimmage got going he showed he was just on another level than everyone else on the floor. So explosive and quick with his first step blowing by defenders where he will throw down monster slams or use his off hand to slip in a layup before the shot blocker can get there. Uses crosses and hesitations to get where he wants on the floor. Such an elite burst attacking off the bounce. Scrubb is also a sound perimeter shooter. When he gets in a rhythm he knocks down threes at a high clip. Threw a couple bullet passes to cutters for scores. This might be one of the more underrated parts of his game. Can take the ball off the glass and go coast to coast. Also capable of playing on the ball initiating the offense.
G Jalen Johnson (Sophomore)
This was my first look at the 6’1” Murray State transfer. The lefty guard can really shoot it from three. Let it fly with consistency throughout the scrimmage. Plays with good pace and proved he could be effective both on and off the ball. Connected on some scoop shots on drives, but was most effective as a catch and shoot guy.
SG Eric Boone (Sophomore)
Boone didn’t play a ton in the scrimmages, but you can see the talent from the Tallahassee CC transfer. At 6’2” the two guard has a good frame and plus athleticism. Capable shooter. Got some extra work in after practice with Scrubb showing he can stroke it from three.
C Sydney Curry (Freshman)
Curry stands at 6’8” and has slimmed down some since we saw him back in the day with the Mac Irvin Fire on the travel team circuit. He was a complete beast all practice long! Curry was a force in all areas. He is a big boy, but what is impressive is how nimble he is on his feet for his size. Snatched rebounds in traffic right out of his opponents hands. He finished EVERYTHING inside once he got his mitts on the ball. Worked well in the pick and roll. Physical post defender. Even hit a face up three. Going to be scary good in two years!
C Jamarion Sharp (Freshman)
Sharp is the other freshman big man and at 7’2” with a long and lanky frame. Will definitely need to add significant strength as time goes on, but you can’t teach the size, length, and upside. Flashed as a shot blocker including pinning Scrubb on a dunk attempt.
SF Trace Young (Sophomore)
Young is a Wyoming transfer that at 6’7” has a lot of intriguing tools. The lefty has great length and he knows how to use it on the defensive end of the floor. Got in passing lanes on a regular basis. Flashed as a driver on a baseline, but seemed to prefer attempting deep threes.
PG Isaiah Ervin (Freshman)
Ervin is a rangy point guard from Hazelwood Central in St. Louis. He played well against a lot of more experienced players. Did what he does best which is shoot the ball from deep with a fluid stroke. Also made a couple quick passes.
SG Justin Saddoris (Sophomore)
Saddoris is going to be a weapon for this team as a spot up shooter. That is exactly what he did in this practice hitting a few threes from the wings and corners.
F Jordan Cousin (Sophomore) & F Xavier Ball (Freshman)
These two combo forwards have similar type games. Thicker bodies with size at 6’7”. They can space the floor at times with their shooting.
