Here’s a look at some immediate impact Freshmen in Kentucky this season. They are presented in no particular order.
Reed Sheppard and Ryan Davidson, North Laurel – Sheppard started and led the team in scoring as an 8th grader and is likely to only get better as time goes by. Davidson has transformed his game to a true shooting guard/wing over the last year or so. Both should star at North Laurel for Coach Nate Valentine for the next 4 years.
Trey Skaggs and Jaylen Davis, Madison Central – Another dynamic Freshman duo, Trey is a highly skilled wing who can be a big time stretch 4 prospect if he continues to grow. Davis is a slashing combo guard who is a two sport star. Don’t be surprised if both are starters for the Indians by Christmas time. Davis already claims an offer from hometown EKU.
Colin Porter, Ashland – Porter’s reputation alone gets him on this list. To be honest, I’ve never seen him play but his reputation from his time at Elliott County is that he’s a flashy point guard who is a great passer and solid scorer. Colin missed the summer with a leg injury but should be good to go when the season starts.
Dallas Roberts and Ian Higdon, North Oldham – Roberts started all last season for the Mustangs and is a known commodity in the 8th region already. Higdon caught my eye this summer at the Mack, Miller and Lofton event at KBC. He has good length and skill and looks like the kind of player who can average 8-10 points per game this season.
Kaleb Glenn, Male – Glenn has maybe the most hype of any freshman in Kentucky this year after playing at Ballard last season and enrolling at Male this summer. Glenn plays in the post for Coach Haworth’s squad but continues to develop his game to expand outside the paint. He’s physically developed a lot already but he needs to keep adding to his game so he can become a wing or stretch 4.
Kenyon Goodin, Butler – Goodin has not had nearly as much hype as the rest of this group but he has the potential to be the best in the group by graduation. A coach’s son, Kenyon has grown up around the game and has a great IQ as a result. He could stand to be a little more selfish but that’s not a bad problem to have at all.
Jacob Meyer, Covington Holy Cross – The only one on this list who transferred before the season, Meyer should step into a starter’s role at Holy Cross from day one. Whether he plays on the ball as a point or off the ball as a scoring combo, Jacob is going to be an impact player for a Holy Cross team that could surprise some people.
Samuel Parrish, Tates Creek – One of my personal favorite players to watch in this class, Sam is a talented player and a very underrated athlete. He helped Tates Creek win a lot of games this summer and he should make a push to be a starter before Christmas break. Parrish is talented enough that he’ll be hard to keep off the court as a Freshman.
