Continue ReadingFall league has kicked off in the state of Illinois this month. Homewood Flossmoor has done a nice job at bringing some of the best teams in the south suburbs and city in for games. Seven of the teams in the league could possibly become top 25 in any one of the rankings in the area this upcoming season.
Whitney Young vs Marian Catholic
In a matchup of high major guards with DJ Steward and Ahron Ulis (Iowa) going head to head this game started out really close as both teams traded baskets throughout the first half. Marian received a huge lift as Elijah Jones (Western Illinois) keeping plays alive and helping Ulis out when defenders were shaded his way. The biggest impact in the game would be the duo of Steward and Tyler Beard for Whitney Young. The Dolphins back court made several plays in transition blowing past Marian defenders for buckets. They also connected on a couple of highlight alley-oops at the rim that had everyone excited that was in attendance. In the end Whitney Young stretched the lead and won in convincing fashion in what was a fun guard battle.
Hillcrest vs Homewood Flossmoor
In the battle of the neighborhood schools this one started out lopsided as Hillcrest couldn’t find an answer for the Homewood Flossmoor press. Hillcrest missed several shots and found themselves down 17 points at one point in the first half. RJ Ogom was unstoppable when on the inside as he finished every shot around the rim. Then right before the first half ended Kenton Wright took advantage of a mismatch and made run which helped Hillcrest get the game back into single digits right before the half. In another fun fall contest HF pulled out the win.
TF South vs Orr
Caught the action of this game in the second half as TF south held a slight lead. Senior guard Reggie Strong for Orr looked good as he made a couple of pull up jump shots in transition. TF South stayed ahead with a strong showing from Elijah Watson. He kept his team up with three key plays where he attacked off the dribble from the three point line. Elijah would either score or get fouled on all possessions and keep his team on top for the win. It was good to see Demarius Splunge back on the court after some nagging injuries in what should be a good and successful senior season for him.
Sleeper from Suburbs
Rich East is a team that will be very tough to play against. They have quality guards and some size to compete with any team in the state. New Head coach Ja’Mere Dismukes has his team playing hard already and I fully expect them to be a contender to be in the top 25 team at some point this season.
