Gabe Coleman’s ceiling is teetering between microwave at the D3 level or possibly a glue guy at NAIA+.
Passer, grinder. Gabe Coleman is a gym rat that improves with hard work and commitment to his craft.
The lane agility time did not impress. Gabe’s straightline speed was slightly better than average. He can pump his legs.
A couple of weaknesses are concerning. Gabe is a scorer at 6-foot-2ish, which is fine. He plays more wing attacker than lead guard. Considering he is traditionally evaluated in a showcase setting, perhaps this is an unfair evaluation. For what it is worth, Caleb Lawrence looked like a wing at our combine and a point guard with his high school team…so it happens. Not everybody can be a point guard in a gym full of guards.
Still, Gabe Coleman needs quicker change of direction to project as a starter beyond high school. With Lawrence County he is a weapon for sure. Scoring, passing. He can do it all in Class AAA District 8. Can he grow beyond that?
Gabe’s shooting was not equivalent to his ordinary standard. As a scorer, Coleman is a nudge above average. He can hit the outside shot or score off the dribble, though neither are elite skills just yet. What Coleman needs most to vault up the rankings, and more importantly, garner more college interest is explosion off each turn. He needs to get a better push when he decides to change directions. Creating separation is such a nuanced thing and Gabe’s basketball mind is sharp enough to think of innovative moves. He just has to make that second and third step more powerful.
