LONG BEACH, Ca.—As the summer winds down and most kids are back in school, here are some of the standouts that exhibited their basketball prowess during the summer months. Before the Fall evaluation period begins, here are a list of prospects that are committed or are garnering Division I interest, including supreme scorer Javonte Johnson (Chauncey Billups Elite). In addition, stock raisers including the multi-faceted point guard Ty Ty Washington (Firestorm Elite) opened the eyes of college coaches near and far.
Caleb Lohner (Wasatch Academy)
2020, WF, 6-foot-7, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lohner is a beastly 4/3 who can knock down the deep 3-point shot and he gets excellent lift on his shot. He has the strength to post up and convert and he is a tough to deal with in transition. The physical attributes are there, he needs to be more consistent with his production, however.
Andre Henry (St. Francis)
2020, CG, 6-foot-3, 165 pounds
As Henry matures physically, his game should flourish.Joel’s Take: The wiry Henry has continued to raise his level of play. Playing through contact is an area he needs to improve, but as his young matures he should become more productive. He has a nice stroke to the 3-point stripe and is a high IQ passer. He is quite potent in transition where he can slash his way to the rim. Overall, his best basketball is ahead of him.
Jordan Shelley (Providence HS)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the bigger surprises of the July evaluation period was the play of Shelley. This scoring machine was tough to deal with in transition and attacked with a relentess motor to create scoring opportunities for himself. He rebounds well, can lead the break, and he plays with a high motor at both ends. Due to his skill set he can run the high screen and roll in the half court set.
Kyle Braun (El Camino Real)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Each and every season Braun has taken the next step in his overall game. He has always been a terrific spot up shooter, but now he is becoming much more explosive. His confidence has risen exponentially as he has gotten stronger as well. Continuing to improve his ball skills against pressure will improve his mid-range scoring skills.
DeShaun Johnson (Washington Prep)
2020, PF, 6-foot-6, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: The “beast” of the LA City Section. At this level Johnson punishes defenders as a finisher and rebounder. He seals well on the block, has good hands, and is explosive. He can step out and hit the elbow shot and his overall touch is solid. However, his most important trait is his relentless motor.
