NORWALK, Ca.—One of the best events of the Fall evaluation period is the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic, directed by Dinos Trigonis. Ron Massey, who coached at Long Beach Jordan High School, captured CIF Southern Section titles and mentored a plethora of student athletes during his tenure. If he were still pacing the sidelines to day, I’m sure he would be marveling at the dynamic talents of 7-foot senior Evan Mobley—who literally exhibited in every which way why he is considered the No. 1 prospect in the national class of 2020.
Paris Dawson (Corona Centennial)
2020, CG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Dawson is the ultimate “glue-type” guard. He makes plays at both ends due to his grit and savvy. He can score from all three levels, but is quite potent as a mid-range scorer. He is more scorer than facilitator, but he’s a winner.
Andre Henry (St. Francis)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds
Henry is evolving into a good all-around basketball playerJoel’s Take: The silky smooth Henry continues to climb the rankings. As he has added strength (late developer), he has become more consistent as a scorer. He can nail the deep 3-point shot slash his way to the rim and finish with either hand. He has an advanced feel for the game that is demonstrated his game managment in the half court.
Isaiah Johnson (Bishop Montgomery)
2020, PF, 6-foot-5, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ultra-bouncy Johnson hovered around the rim at this event. He can drop step and finish above the rim or utilize an improved 1st step to get to the basket for the conversion. He excels in transition due to his hot motor and assertiveness. He needs to continue to improve his ball skills against pressure as well as his 3-point touch, but he is a gamer.
Luke Turner (Rancho Christian)
2021, WF, 6-foot-6, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Although Turner’s shot was streaky at his event, it was evident that he has continued to add to his game. His lateral quickness on defense was impressive and he was much more assertive as a rebounder. As he continues to add strength, his game will continue to improve.
JT Tan (Rolling Hills Prep)
2020, C, 6-foot-7, 250 pounds
Joel’s Take: Tan lacks lift and is a rim-level player, but his foot work and ability to carve out space in the paint is impressive. He uses his thick frame and strong lower body to set up on the block and his pivot work in the paint allows him to free himself from defenders. His touch out to the elbow is solid as well and as a result he should be a solid low D1 or DII recruit.
