GARDEN GROVE, Ca.—The fall season is a great chance to evaluate prospects prior to the up coming season and the Prep Hoops 250 EXPO is one of the events that brings a nice collections of prospects from various levels. At the top of the list super junior KJ Simpson (Chaminade) wowed onlookers with explosive finishes and suffocating defense while the ultimate glue-guy Jonah El-Farra impacted the game at both ends.
KJ Simpson (Chaminade)
2021, CG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Simpson is one of the more talented combo-guards in So-Cal and that was on full display at this event. He dominated both ends with his explosive moves to the basket and his active hands on defense. He grabbed numerous rebounds, lead the break, and either finished well-above the rim or delivered a nifty assist.
Zachary Davidson (Mater Dei)
2023, WF, 6-foot-7, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: The multi-skilled Davidson is just scratching the surface of his immense potential. He has that prototypical rangy frame with long arms and his skill set has continued to evolve. He can step out and drain the deep jump shot or utilize the up-fake to get to the basket. He’ll be one of the more intriguing prospects to follow in the coming seasons.
Garrett Schaefer (Temecula Valley)
2020, CG, 6-foot-5, 185 pounds
CG Garrett Schaefer has a nice combination of size and passing savvyJoel’s Take: Schaefer has a nice frame with good length and he has gotten stronger each and every season. He has a solid skill set and he impacts the game in a variety of ways. He has the intincts to play inside while posting up smaller guards, yet can snatch a rebound and lead the break. His jump shot needs to get more consistent, but he’s a definite sleeper in the senior class.
Nicholas Davidson (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davidson exhibits finesse and skill. He can be an ideal fit in a pick and pop situation as his touch is smooth out to 20-feet. In addition, he has good hands, solid feet, and his fundamentals are evident. Left and righ-handed finishes were on display as well as some solid post work.
Hayden Gray (Santa Fe Christian)
2021, PG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: If you’re curious to find out who was the purest point guard in attendance, look no further than Gray. The wiry Gray changes speeds with aplomb, gets to where he needs to go with the ball, and can finish with either hand while attacking. He plays with a great motor and his head is always up in transition.
