GARDEN GROVE, Ca.—The fall season is a great chance to evaluate prospects prior to the up coming season and the Prep Hoops 250 EXPO is one of the events that brings a nice collections of prospects from various levels. At the top of the list super junior KJ Simpson (Chaminade) wowed onlookers with explosive finishes and suffocating defense while the ultimate glue-guy Jonah El-Farra impacted the game at both ends.
Jonah El-Farra (West Ranch)
2021, WF, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: These are the type of events that guys like El-Farra are given a chance to showcase their skill set. El-Farra was everywhere at this event as he converted at the rim, knocked down passes in the half court set, and faciliated the offense. He can attack off the dribble, has a solid pull-up game, but it’s his motor that stands out.
Blake Brewer (Mater Dei)
2022, SG, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: I think this is a pretty good indication how much talent exists in the Monarch program. Brewer is not a standout in the Mater Dei program, just yet, but he has the frame, evolving skill set, and budding athleticism to make his mark someday in the future. He slashed his way to numerous baskets and showed a nice burst off the dribble as well as a potent runner. Defensively, he showed active hands and solid lateral quickness.
Trevan Martin (Santa Fe Christian)
2021, SG, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
2021 Trevan Martin is one of the better glue-types in his class.Joel’s Take: The ultimate “glue-guy” continued his all-around play here at this event. He has a solid frame with good length and his instincts for this game are impressive. He has a knack for always being around the ball as he influences the stat box with rebounds, assists, and of course points. He can score from all three levels, but it’s his attacking style in the paint area that stood out.
Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa (Brookside Christian)
2021, SG, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: The biggest surprise of the event was the play of Rubio De La Rosa. Immediately he took control of the game with his ball skills and aggressive intent. He pushed it well on the break, has a knack to score at the rim, and his middle game looked solid as well.
Tobias West (Douglas County)
2021, PG, 5-foot-10, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: West was one of the better point guards in attendance. He showed the ability to finish with either hand and his burst off the dribble was potent. He has the ability to knock in the 3-point shot and his vision was on display as well as he tossed a few look-ahead passes in transiton. Due to his quick 1st step he navigated the paint area quite often and dropped of some nifty assists.
