We’ll be providing comprehensive coverage from the event throughout the upcoming week. Here is a brief look at 10 of the best perimeter defenders we saw at the event.
CASHEUS COVINGTON | 6’3 G | ARCHBISHOP CARROLL ’20
Covington was effective as both an on-ball defender and a help defender. He pressured the ball well consistently while remaining active and alert off the ball. Covington clearly takes pride in being a good defender and this was evident on Saturday.
ELIJAH HAWKINS | 5’9 PG | DEMATHA ’21
Hawkins is a very pesky on-ball defender who stays in close proximity to his man and contests virtually every shot. He is quick enough to stay in front of most ball-handlers and has excellent hands.
BYRON IRELAND | 6’1 G | ST. FRANCES ’21
Ireland is sneaky strong and tough to create separation against. He gave commendable effort on the defensive side and that alone in this setting was good enough to draw positive results.
JAKE KOVERMAN | 6’5 SF | SOUTHERN ’21
Koverman brings good length to the wing and did a nice job defending the ball. He actively contested shots and was very disruptive as a result of his size.
MILTON MATTHEWS | 6’3 G | ROCK CREEK ’20
Matthews not only scored it at a high-level on Saturday, but also did his due diligence on the defensive side. He worked just as hard to prevent his man from scoring as he did to hunt shots.
CLARENCE RUPERT | 6’7 SF | MILLER SCHOOL ’20
Rupert is a big wing who played with a high activity level and this resulted in several deflections. He really has a good chance to be a true lockdown defender as he continues to grow into his massive frame.
YUSUF SALIH | 6’2 G | HIGHLAND ’21
Salih played his role nicely on Saturday. This included making several hustle plays on both ends of the floor and playing solid defense on the ball.
TREY THOMAS | 6’2 G | WISE ’22
Thomas is a stout perimeter defender who can pick the pocket of pretty much any opponent. He exhibited good instincts, coordination and timing when tracking the ball.
CAM TWEEDY | 6’6 F | WESTLAKE ’20
This might come as a surprise to some, but Tweedy defended very well on the perimeter at the DMVelite80. He showed that he is quick enough to defend on the perimeter and force turnovers.
DARREN WRIGHT | 5’7 G | KIPP ’21
One thing that stood out about Wright was that he consistently picked his man up full court. He made his opponents work to bring the ball up the court and this was a rare sight to see.
