We designed our “All-Area All-Star Teams” for some of the strongest conferences in the class. While it was a relatively down year out in the Springs, here is our “Colorado Springs Metro League All-Star Team based on my predictions this year, including my breakout player of the conference which does not mean MVP but player I expect will take a huge step this upcoming season.
First Team:
PG: Peyton Westfall – Pine Creek – Sr.
Westfall is a player that you can build around as he does a bit of everything well. He moves without the ball, he hits the open man, he is a good ball-handler but what separates him from other guards is his ability to shoot it from essentially anywhere on the court. He is a quick guard who makes good decisions with the ball in his hands, he can come off of the screen and get a shot up and if he is open just know that there is a high possibility that it goes in. This high IQ guard is set up for a big year where Pine Creek will ask him to up all of his numbers. He is going to have some big scoring nights, he just has to be ready to lead which I do not see him having any issues with.
SG: Keyshawn Maltbia – Fountain Fort Carson – Sr.
When you think of the best scorers in the state one of the first people that comes to mind is Maltbia who is absolutely a bucket. He can shoot, he can drive and finish with either hand, he dunks and also is a player that you do not want defending you as he is a solid on-ball defender. There should be more schools on him as he is able to have big nights no matter the competition. He put up 17.6 points and six rebounds a game as a junior and will most likely up those numbers. When looking at starting a team in the Springs one of the first people that comes to mind is Maltbia as he had a very big summer where he dominated in showcases and is looking to take that momentum into the season.
SF: Schaefer Reichart – Doherty – Jr.
Every team needs a spark plug and person who can pick up the energy with 3-pointers and also baskets in bunches and Schaefer does just that. Schaefer does not force too many baskets and plays the right way. He runs the floor well, slashes and finds the open man when the ball is in his hands. Schaefer is a high IQ player that is a microwave player. He is coming off of a year where there was a health scare and he showed nothing but resiliency and strength through that process and is also coming back as strong as ever. That is the type of player I am willing to go to war with and one of the first that I would start my team with. Reichart is an easy decision for my 1st Team.
SF/PF: James Sanders – Fountain Fort Carson – Sr.
My team will be small, but with Moerman at the Center spot manning the middle that’s okay, I need me some bucket getters that are going to bring the best out of others and push them to the limit and I will do that with Sanders who is a bit undersized but able to score as well as rebound. This is a team that will definitely help you with shooting but what is great about them is their ability to defend and rebound as well. Sanders is a wing that you can throw out there and he is going to find the cracks in the defense for open baskets. He is going to push his other teammates and his energy is contagious. Should be a year where he steps up and is on more people’s radars.
C: Lucas Moerman – Doherty – Sr.
This was my first pick on the list and what will have this team standout as he is a big man that impacts the game on both ends of the floor and is one of the most improved players in the entire state from freshman to senior year. He is a hard worker that fights for every single possession, can score and also blocks or changes so many of the team’s shots that he is the game plan on how to slow down this Doherty team. He is a team first player that has so much upside and this Air Force commit is looking to have a huge senior season where he is racking up double-doubles.
Bench
Guard: Jaiden Sanders – Rampart – Sr.
Guard that can score the ball. He will he to become more of a passer that sets guys up and see his numbers increase not only assists but will make him a more dynamic scorer as if the ball gets to flowing it usually comes around. He gets to his sports on the floor and can attack on isolation baskets. He is a guard that can get going and score in bunches and he will be a player that will have to step up more if Rampart plans on turning the ship around.
Guard: Kolben Barney – Palmer – Jr.
Barney is ready to step out and get on more radars after a decent sophomore season which he put up six points and also recorded four rebounds a game as well. He has shown that he is able to score when called upon and also able to fit in with the varsity players. Now with a year of experience and also hopeful work put in in the off-season it is his time to shine. Barney is a guard that is able to knock down shots, get to the rim and defend. With big time scorers leaving Palmer it is now time for him to step into a bigger role as he will have to be one of the main scorers that the offense runs through. He is on my watch list.
Wing: Ladarius Mays—Coronado – Sr.
Mays will step put on the wing as a player on this second team that knows how to score off-ball. Last season he put up 16 points a game but that also came with plenty of losses. Now with a more team-oriented approach hopefully he will be able to do it in a more efficient way. He took plenty of chances as the lead guard which led to turnovers but he is also aggressive and that is a great thing to have on a team that is out there learning on the fly. This multi-sport athletic brings an edge to this team and hopefully others fall in line so that they can compete to the best of their abilities.
Post: Agustin Rivas – Liberty – Jr.
Rivas is another player that is a bit undersized as a post so this will be a small second unit but they will all be able to rebound and score from different areas. For Liberty it was up to Rivas to provide the calm to the storm and he was able to with seven points and four rebounds a game. Consistency will be key this upcoming year. Rivas will be able to space the floor, he will find the open spots and he is also going to give his all on every possession. Excited to see how he comes into this junior season.
Post: Brycen Scherr – Coronado – Sr.
Scherr is a player that did not play too much and is not big on the scene but will have to do more this upcoming year and with that comes exposure. He is able to space the floor as a shooting big man with size but is also able to rebound well in limited minutes. This will have to be his time to step up and show out.
