Tyson becomes the second member of the 2021 class in Washington to give a verbal commitment, with Battle Ground’s Kaden Perry (Gonzaga) being the other.
Coming off an outstanding sophomore season, Tyson’s recruitment really started to pick up. I had the chance to evaluate him throughout the winter, as well as the summer session with Mt. Spokane and the WIBCA D1 Viewing Event at Bellevue College. Tyson steadily got better, even from his first team all state performance for Mt. Spokane in March. The one consistent for Tyson throughout the last year was his motor. It never stops running and while he has a great mixture of talent and skill, his motor allows him to outplay many other players that possess more athleticism or size. Point Loma offered, followed by Denver and those offers would be piled on by Idaho State, Eastern Washington and eventually Boise State. Tyson also received some interest from other schools and he did take a visit to Washington State to participate in an open gym and attend a football game. When it came down to it, Boise State was the place he knew he wanted to be.
The 6’7 small forward first attended Boise State’s elite camp and he really liked the atmosphere. When he went on a separate visit to Boise, he says they just took it to another level. Tyson told Prep Hoops, “You could feel the energy at the football game. Also, the players were all super nice to me.” Their recruiting pitch was a home run when they told him how they plan to utilize his skill set and have him fill the role that Chandler Hutchinson and Derek Alston Jr. have played. “Me playing their spot and seeing their success at the four spot is intriguing to me. I can play my game and play freely.”
High school basketball season is right around the corner and Mt. Spokane will not be able to creep up on anyone this time around. One thing is for certain though, and that is Tyson Degenehart will come out as an improved player from a year ago and his motor will never stop running.
