Friday night’s Central Cali Showcase was no exception. Taking place in Bakersfield, the Pangos brand brought together some of the best talent in Central California. PH takes a look at some of the standouts from the C/O 2020 showcase game.
MVP: David Whatley 6’3 SF Bakersfield 2020 – There’s a place for a guy like Whatley in college basketball. He reminds me of Tyshawn Pickford, the 6’4 guard at Northern Iowa who was one of the top rebounders in the nation two years ago en route to setting the freshmen rebounding record. They are both elite rebounders. Some guys just have a knack for getting the ball off the rim. Whatley easily had 20 rebounds in the game. In addition to grabbing boards, he also showed great hands, and was a versatile defender.
Best Prospect: Jo – Jo Hunter 6’4 SF San Joaquin Memorial 2022 – Hunter showed why he has a chance to be a high major recruit. Even against older players, he easily put his stamp on the game. Big time competitor, and elite defender. With his size and length, he has a chance to be dominant on the defensive end.
1st Team
Josh Codaman 5’11 SG Independence 2020 – Codaman was the best shooter off the day. Textbook release, and perfect form. He barely touched rim on some of his shots. He’s a specialist, however his specialty is knocking down shots.
Tyus Parrish-Tillman 6’7 Fresno Christian 2022 –The big fella brought it in this game. He played with fluid mobility, and better feet. Tillman got into a nice rhythm and really showed his potential. Good hands and a nice soft touch around the rim.
Noah West 6’3 SG Centennial 2020 – West is a gunslinger. In a game full of shooters, he certainly held his own. He showed that he could do more than just catch and shoot, as he sprinkled in a couple of dribble drive buckets to compliment his 3’s.
Nico Thomas 6’3 SF Roosevelt 2020 – Thomas is a big strong physical player. Despite his size, he has great balance and extremely nimble feet. He plays downhill in transition and uses a variety of Euros and two steps to finish at the rim. Quick twitch athlete who gets off the floor well for a man his size.
Mike Gentry 6’0 SG North 2020 – Gentry was another of the shooters on the floor. More accurate when he can dribble into his shot, however he can’t be left alone. Willing defender, who showed a solid floor -game as well.
