Class of 2022 Top 40 Standouts
Christian Watson, Long Beach Poly
Christian is the younger brother of Peyton Watson, one of the fastest rising junior prospects in the country, but Christian is quickly making a name for himself in the 2022 class. The 6-foot-1 point guard is as smooth as they come with the ball in his hands. He creates offensive opportunities for himself and others both in transition and half-court settings and makes high level reads out of pick-and-roll action. Watson needs to add some strength to his wiry frame to better finish through contact, but he uses change of speed and direction well to get into the paint and put pressure on the rim.
Derek Schneider, Harvard-Westlake
Schneider’s game isn’t categorized under flashy or pretty, but he certainly gets the job done on both ends. The 6-foot-5 forward crashes the offensive boards to create easy buckets for himself and second chance opportunities for his team. Schneider is a capable downhill driver and finisher and passes well out of the high and low posts.
Donovan Dent, Corona Centennial
Dent took the Best of SoCal Fall Showcase asa chance to show people what he’s made of. The 6-foot-1 guard was a scoring machine in this game, knocking down pull-up jumpers from multiple levels of the floor, but also blew by defenders and got into the paint for strong finishes at the basket. Dent has a strong and quick first step and he’s difficult to keep in front when he has a full head of steam.
Jermaine Rogers II, Ayala
Rogers was another guy who made the most of his opportunity to play in front of various scouts and media types. The 6-foot-2 guard has a powerful frame to go along with a high motor and relentless scoring mentality. All of those attributes combined, Rogers was a tough cover for any defender, and scored with catch-and-shoot 3-point shots or power finishes in the lane. He also competed at a high level on the defensive end.
Mac West III, Lawndale
File West under the “wired to score” column as he impressed with his inside-out scoring prowess. The 6-foot-3 wing isn’t the most explosive athlete, but he has a crafty handle and uses change of pace to get by defenders and into the paint where he can finish through contact. West showed his ability to knock down a perimeter set shot when defenders sagged off.
