2021 Top 20 Standouts (Part 2)
Peyton Watson, Long Beach Poly
Watson continues to be one of the fastest rising prospects in the country. The 6-foot-6 wing went from unranked (by some) to a top 35 player in America over the course of the summer and it’s easy to see why. Watson is as versatile as they come. He can stroke the 3-point shot with consistency, but has the ball skills and fluid athleticism to break defenders down in isolation and finish around the basket. Watson uses his impressive length well on the defensive end as evidenced by his ability to deflect in passing lanes and block would-be baskets at the rim.
TJ Wainwright, Westchester
Wainwright is the definition of “wired to score.” The 6-foot-3 shooting guard is one of the better shooters on the west coast and is beginning to turn into a true isolation scorer at multiple levels of the floor. Wainwright has made big strides with his ball skills, space creation and first step speed which have allowed him to break down just about any defender and go get a bucket. True to form, however, Wainwright still makes the majority of his living as a knockdown 3-point shooter with deep range.
Wilhelm Breidenbach, Mater Dei
Breidenbach has been on the radar for quite some time and he’s one of the most consistent producers you’ll find anywhere. The 6-foot-9 forward is a high motor and high IQ player who, like his teammate Nick Davidson, can score in the paint with either hand or spread the floor to the 3-point line with consistency. What sets Breidenbach aside from most other big men out west is his passing ability, whether it be a rebound, push the break, find a teammate pass or a simple outlet pass to a point guard, he delivers them all with timing and placement.
AJ Burgin, San Diego
Burgin didn’t get a whole lot of looks offensively in this game, but what made him stood out is the fact that he didn’t force the issue. The 6-foot-3 guard knocked down a handful of his smooth and deep-ranged 3-point shots, but upped his teammates productivity by advancing the ball in transition and moving it side to side in the half-court setting. Defensively, Burgin is one of the higher IQ team defenders you’ll find.
Luke Turner, Rancho Christian
There’s no denying the fact that Turner is one of the better shooters in the region, we’ve been writing about that since he entered high school a couple of years ago. The 6-foot-6 wing continues to advance his game with passing, rebounding, pushing the break, and working on his ball skills to better create for himself and others.
