There were 2996 lives lost and over 6000 additional people that were injured. Those totals would have been much higher if not for the heroes of that day. First responders put themselves in the face of danger, just so that others could get away from it. Everyday people did extraordinary things so that friends, family, and even strangers, could survive. On a day like today, 18 years to the date in the future, it’s important for us to celebrate the heroes of the future.
High school basketball in Michigan is filled with amazing young people that are destined for incredible things. In one way or another, some will become heroes. Here are 5 high school basketball players that I believe are future heroes:
Carlos Johnson (6’7″, SF, Benton Harbor)
Johnson is a nationally reknowned prospect. He’s a bulldog on the court, fighting for boards and playing through contact. Being great doesn’t come free. Johnson is who he is because of the work that he’s put in. He’s willing to put in more time than most, and get more battered and bruised than most. The way that Johnson has come about greatness will allow him become a hero to many.
Matt Kohler (2020, PG, Bedford)
Kohler is a testament to hard work and patience. He’s shown continued growth and improvement every year. Kohler has turned himself into a potential future college basketball player. The traits and qualities that have allowed for this development on the court, point toward big things off the court as well. 10 years from now, kids going to Bedford will remember Matt Kohler.
Zach Maynard (6’4″, SG, Brother Rice)
Maynard can get hot from beyond the arc, but has developed his athleticism and ball skills, allowing him to attack off the bounce. Maynard plays the game with class and dignity. He always dishes out credit to his peers and is the first to lend a hand to help up a teammate, or even an opponent. Get to know Zach Maynard and you will know a future hero.
Freddie McIntosh (2020, PG, Saginaw)
Watch the young man play the game of basketball and you’ll see what I mean. He’s 100% fearless on the court. McIntosh plays through contact and is a physical defender. If he continues to work harder than most and attacks success off the court the way he does on it, then he’ll have a huge impact on al ot of people.
Josiah Smith (2020, G/F, Detroit Catholic Central)
Smith is one of the brightest and most articulate young men you will find. He carries a 4.3GPA at Detroit Catholic Central and has been shown interest by some of the top academic institutions in the country. Don’t forget, he’s a talented basketball player as well. Smith is a threat to score from deep, but if a defender steps out on him, he can attack the basket.
