This weekend that vicinity is Anaheim, CA and the Prep Hoops California Expo. For most of these players, this will be my first opportunity to verify what I’ve seen on film. In this article PH takes a look at some of those players in the C/O 2021.
Nicholas Davidson 6’9 PF Mater Dei Catholic (#11PHSC 2021) – It’s going to be a treat to watch Davidson! One of the premiere bigs on the WC. He has a versatile skill – set, stretches the floor, and shows playmaking ability. Interested in seeing what type of run and jump athlete he is.
Sam Goldman 6’0 SG Hart – Goldman’s got a trigger. Ultimate floor spacer. Love players that move well without the ball. Knock down shooter in catch and shoot situations, Goldman also uses rhythm dribbles to get his shot off. Interested in learning what kind of defender he is.
Lee Hubbard III 6’1 PG Riordan (#42PHNC 2021) – He’s nice. Pure PG with a tight handle. He didn’t come down from San Fran for nothing. Form looks good on his shot, and he shows the ability to create for teammates. Interested in seeing how he looks against quality competition.
Jed Miller 5’11 PG Agoura – I’ll take a heady floor general any day. Especially one with the ability to knock down shots. Miller is a long range bomber. A floor spacer that forces a defender to stay attached. I’ve seen Miller shoot a ton on film. Interested in seeing if he can get his shot off against high level athletes.
Michael Okonowski 5’10 PG Hart – Looks like the Expo may turn into a shooting gallery. Okonowski is a catch and shoot specialist. Great shot prep. Okonowski’s hands are always available, and his feet are always set. No wasted motion in his shot. The ball hits his hand and it’s up and usually through the net. I know he can shoot it, interested in learning about the other aspects of his game.
Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa 6’3 SG Brookside (#5PHNC 2021) – Rubio’s a must see! At the end of the day it’s all about production, and he produces. As a sophomore he averaged 25 7 3 and 4 for a team that went 27-4. Big time player. I just want to see how good he really is.
Kenneth Simpson Jr 6’2 PG Chaminade (#9PHSC 2021) – Check your pockets around Simpson. Unbelievably quick hands. Simpson is a big time defender, that turns defense into offense instantly. He’s so good defensively there’s no need to discuss his offensive game. In a setting like this, interested in seeing who dares to challenge him off the dribble.
Grant Tull 6’6 SF Gridley – Lethal lefty. Tull is a knock down specialist. What jumped of the film at me was the number of off balance shots he made. Good size to get his shot off. Tull can be effective at the 3 or 4. What I’m interested in seeing is which position he defends best.
Cameron Walker 5’10 PG Turlock – Walker is a throwback. Old school PG game. Great mid – range pull up. He gets consistent paint touches, and has the foot and hand speed to cut the head off of the opposing teams primary ballhander. Interested in getting a closer look at his shooting mechanics.
