To get started, we’ll rank the guards throughout the state. There were 19 guys we consider “guards” that we ranked, so in part one we will look at 12-7 and give you a breakdown of their games to show why we ranked them where we did. Enjoy and be sure to keep an eye out for more rankings breakdowns throughout the next week or so.
7) Yedida Mubiayi | 6’0” | VA Academy (#20 Overall)
Everything we hear is that Mubiayi will be heading to VA Academy, and he has so many tools to work with that if he ever figures out how to use them properly he’ll be one that blows up before he heads to college. The 6’0” guard is an elite athlete with springs that go way above the rim and good end-to-end speed that makes him a menace in transition. He can get up and down with the best of them, he can create off the bounce and he has the opportunity to be one heck of a defender as well.
8) DJ Campbell | 5’10” | Kecoughtan (#21 Overall)
Another one of the many guards in the 757 who had great freshman campaigns, Campbell was one of the best guards in the Peninsula area and shows a lot of promise moving forward. He’s a strong and dynamic guard who has a quick first step, changes directions well and is able to push in transition where he can make plays and finish through traffic as well. He sits down defensively and plays with good energy, and with continued work on the craft he should be someone that’s a two way playmaker.
9) Cavan Reilly | 6’2” | Middleburg (#34 Overall)
Reilly is a kid who could blow up and move way up these rankings with his size and shot making ability that allows him to play both guard positions. He has great form off the catch from the feet up and has a quick release and he’s a guy you can run off of screens or find in transition for easy shots. He can handle the rock against pressure and make good decisions, and he should become more explosive moving forward.
10) Elijah White | 5’9” | Kempsville (#37 Overall)
The question with White is whether or not he’s going to grow, but the young lead guard helped Kempsville turn around in the Beach District last year and will be running the show under new Head Coach Darren Saunderlin after his legendary success at Booker T Washington for nearly two decades. D-Nice has had some good point guards and could help White who has a natural feel for the game and great playmaking ability off the bounce. He plays with good pace, he has some toughness about him and he’s able to make plays in one-on-one situations.
11) Quanye Veney | 5’10” | Highland Springs (#38 Overall)
A two sport star that also excels with one of the top football programs in the state, Veney is a natural athlete that has a legitimate chance to excel moving forward in both. He plays the game effortlessly, he’s one of the fastest kids on the court and competes with energy on both ends of the floor. He’ll continue to develop and depending on what sport he chooses he could be getting recruited for a college scholarship by the end of his high school career.
12) Walker Andrews | 5’11” | Virginia Episcopal (#40 Overall)
Andrews is an under the radar guy who was one of the top scorers in the 540 at James River High School in the Buchanan area north of Roanoke. He’s played some good level of AAU ball and has grown and gotten much more athletic since the last time I saw him, and he’s a high percentage shot maker with range and a quick release. He’s reclassifying at VES this year and with the extra year he should have more time to develop and grow and should be one to watch moving forward.
