To get started, we’ll rank the guards throughout the state. There were 21 guys we consider “wings” that we ranked, so in part two we will look at 14-8 and give you a breakdown of their games to show why we ranked them where we did. Enjoy and be sure to keep an eye out for more rankings breakdowns throughout the next week or so.
14) Anthony Davis | 6’3” | VA Academy (#35 Overall)
Davis is a big bodied wing who is able to use his strength and athleticism to slash through the paint and finish at the rim. He plays with a high motor on both ends of the floor, he rebounds the ball well for his position, he’s able to guard multiple positions and make shots when he’s left open. He’s the epitome of a ball player, as he’s willing to play whatever position he’s needed to play and he finds ways to impact the game even when he isn’t the go-to scorer on the floor.
13) Cameron Kearney | 6’4” | Salem (VB) (#31 Overall)
Salem is in a rebuilding state in the Beach District right now, but Kearney’s freshman season was a bright spot for them as he was one of the best freshman wings in the 757 last year. He’s a big kid who can play inside-out and plays in the post at times, but he’s a natural athlete who moves well on the perimeter and in transition and should have the ability to translate out there once he’s no longer the biggest guy on his team. He plays above the rim, can put it on the floor in transition and is all over the place on both ends with a good knack for the ball.
12) Piercen Young | 6’2” | Virginia Episcopal School (#29 Overall)
Young is transferring to VES where he’ll reclassify and become a big part of their team after having a stellar first two years at local public school Brookville. He comes from a basketball family, his sister is a freshman at Kent State, and he has a mix of toughness, skill set and high IQ at his position. He has a great midrange game where he can make some shots off the bounce, and his form is hard to block as he shoots it over his head. He’s a hard worker who should improve his ball handling and shot from deep with the extra year and will have a chance to follow his sister as a division one recruit if he pans out the way it looks.
11) Garrett Brennan | 6’2” | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes (#28 Overall)
Brennan may not be that well known yet because he didn’t play much for a St. Stephen’s St. Agnes team that won the VISAA D1 State Championship last year, but with time he’ll likely follow in the footsteps of the guys in front of him and learn from them as well. He’s a skilled wing with good size, good feel for the game and a solid skill set where he’s shown that he can score from all three levels. He makes the right read and right play on both ends of the floor consistently, and he’ll slowly start to see more time for a stacked SSSAS team who is looking to repeat this year.
10) Paul Lewis | 6’1” | Bishop O’Connell (#27 Overall)
The brother of former O’Connell star and current JMU star Matt Lewis, it’s easy to see some of the similarities in the younger brother’s game, especially if he continues to grow to the height his brother is. He’s a good athlete who makes an impact on both ends of the floor, he can catch and shoot from deep and he has natural abilities and feel for the game at a young age. With the departure of some of their top players from last year, expect Lewis to make a big impact this year in the WCAC and for years to come moving forward.
9) Ihsan Duncan | 6’2” | Hampton (#25 Overall)
Duncan is another guy who may shoot up the rankings with time, but he had a solid freshman season for Hampton and was the perfect glue guy for Team Loaded VA who finished as the #3 15U team in the country this year. He’s a big, strong wing who is a good athlete and is able to overpower most opponents in the post and on the defensive end. He does a little bit of everything for his team as he rebounds, defends, scores from multiple levels and makes good decisions for the most part. He’s a kid with a bright future who could have a breakout season on the Peninsula this year.
8) Bryce Blaine | 6’3” | LC Bird (#24 Overall)
Another Bird kid who is set to explode this season, Blaine isn’t going to be the go-to-guy by any means but his skill set and ability to impact the game on both ends is something you can’t ignore. He has a good frame and he plays all over the court for them, he can catch and shoot from deep and attack closeouts and he plays with good energy on both ends of the floor. He’s the type of kid you don’t notice until a little ways into the game when you realize he’s doing all of the little things as well as putting the ball in the basket in different ways.
