Moving On: Four Dell Rapids players graduated from a season ago but just one starter (Logan Heim) and one guard reserve (Nick Boever). Heim’s double-double ability is now at Dakota Wesleyan and his size will need to be replaced. Dell Rapids has guys with the potential to fill that spot but Heim’s touch made him a weapon. Boever supplied depth to the backcourt.
Returning Starters: The four guard/wing starting rotation that played in the state tournament and was a basket away from a consolation trophy returns. Colin Rentz, Connor Rentz, Logan Ellingson, and Drew Van Regenmorter are those four players with the Rentz being juniors and Ellingston/Van Regenmorter being senior leaders. Colin Rentz finished his year as the team’s aggressive playmaker leading the team in scoring numbers and assists plus he’s a strong rebounder from the guard spot. Ellingson is the most aggressive shooter with Connor Rentz being a three point weapon ready to shoot at all times. Van Regenmorter plays with a motor and often produces big man numbers from a guard position.
Reserves Playing a Bigger Role: Heim is gone but Dell Rapids has the potential to be even better up front with potential and depth. Van Regenmorter plays bigger than his frame as does Karsen Welbig, a 6-foot-2 senior forward. Six-foot-7 Carter Nelson played off the bench often in limited minutes as a sophomore but he’s a top five level college prospect in the South Dakota’s 2021 class. Nelson has the potential top help in big minutes as does Coby Maeschen, a 6-foot-4 junior forward who was the 6th man as a sophomore a year ago. Maseschen and Nelson could be a fantastic frontcourt pair for the next two seasons. Landon Ruesink played as a 5-foot-8 guard off the bench a year ago and has the talent to step into a big role immediately.
Potentials from the JV: Five-foot-8 senior Carter Rentz is a player to watch in the backcourt. Rentz, sophomores Alex Anderson and Victor Knuppe, and junior Avery Boechler will all work to try and grab a reserve role in the 8th to 10th position off the bench this winter.
