Continue ReadingFargo Davies went into last year as a state title contender/favorite and the Eagles didn’t disappoint, going 24-3 and reaching the state championship game before losing to the buzzsaw that was Jamestown. The Eagles won the EDC regular season title and the EDC Tournament. Despite losing three starters, Fargo Davies will once again be among the most talented teams in the state and a contender in Class A.
GO-TO GUY: Cole Hage
I could see this iteration of Fargo Davies having four guys average 10-15 points per game with another four or five averaging 4-7. The depth is impressive despite graduating some big scorers. I don’t see Cole Hage being a traditional go-to guy in the sense that he’ll pump up a ton of shots every game, but I do think it’s likely that in scenarios where the Eagles need to run a play to get a good shot, Hage is the guy they’ll run a play for. The 6-foot-2 combo forward averaged 13 points per game a year ago and can score inside and out.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Owen Hektner
Hektner saw minimal minutes last year behind some talented upperclassmen, but he’s clearly talented. At 6-foot-5, he’s a good enough shooter to space the floor and active enough to get to the paint and finish. He’s active off the ball as a cutter and offensive rebounder and he’s a solid passer. His defense is solid and his ability to guard up or down in a lineup gives the Eagles a lot of versatility on that end of the floor.
QUESTION: Who plays point guard?
Braeton Motschenbacher was one of the best players in Class A last winter and over the course of the last two years, has been one of the best players in the EDC. He was the team’s leading scorer, big shot taker and big shot maker. Replacing his scoring alone is going to be a big enough challenge, but replacing his steadiness at the point is even bigger. Ty Satter played a lot of minutes last year and is probably the guy naturally suited to step into the starting lineup at point. Is he capable of resetting an offense with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock and getting the Eagles something good?
OUTLOOK
Davies is at the point where it would appear as though there will always be a ton of talent in the program. While the Eagles graduate a few high-end guys, there are still players in house including Cam Van Dam and Grayson Haman (plus Hage) that are of all-league caliber. The EDC has four teams I could realistically see winning the league next winter and Davies might be the favorite.
