It was a struggle against the elite teams as they went 0-9 against the top-four teams in the league. With four starters back in the fold, there’s a chance Dickinson could take a big step forward in 2019-20.
GO-TO GUY: Jaiden Wright/Kobe Krenz
Wright and Krenz form arguably the best backcourt in the WDA after combining to average 31.5 points per game last season. Wright is a big, physical guard who can bully his way to the rim while Krenz is the more aggressive perimeter shooter. If Krenz can improve on his 3-point shooting (31 percent in 2018-19) and the two can collectively cut down on their turnovers (172 combined), this pair can lead Dickinson to a lot of wins.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Jayden Hocker
Hocker averaged seven points per game on good efficiency as a sophomore and could give the Midgets a fourth guy capable of scoring in double figures. He knocked down 40 percent of his 3-pointers and he’s got the size and athleticism to hold his own on the wing. If he takes the typical sophomore-to-junior jump, he could take a lot of scoring pressure off Wright/Krenz as a shooter.
QUESTION: How much better can the offense be?
Dickinson’s defense wasn’t terrible last year. Opponents scored 70 points per game but only shot 42 percent from the floor. The bulk statistics looked good in part because Dickinson’s offense was a slog at times. The Midgets collectively shot just 40 percent from the field and averaged 19 turnovers per game. Those numbers have to improve if this team is going to take a step forward.
OUTLOOK
Dickinson is one of the teams that should be much-improved in 2019-20. With all-league caliber guards in Wright and Krenz plus one of the best big men in the WDA in Tallon Klatt (9.8 ppg and 5.5 rpg), Dickinson won’t lack for talent or experience. The defense should be a strength again and if the offense can improve marginally particularly when it comes to ball security, this team could push for a top-four finish.
