Continue ReadingBismarck Legacy was one of the surprise teams in Class A last winter, winning 15 games and getting to the state tournament. The Sabers lost twice in blowout fashion to Fargo Davies and West Fargo, but also earned an upset win over Mandan at state. With multiple starters back, Legacy has reasonable cause for optimism heading into the 2019-20.
GO-TO GUY: Rhett Clements
Clements is one of the best returning players in the WDA after averaging 14 points and 7.5 rebounds as a junior. He only shot 24 percent from 3-point range but converted on better than 65 percent of his 2-pointers to maintain really good efficiency. He’s a tough guy to defend because he’s strong, athletic, active and skilled as a slasher and finisher.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Joey Buzalsky
Buzalsky saw minutes last year as just a freshman and experienced his share of ups and downs. He showed a strong ability to get to the free throw line. If he can improve on his shooting, he’s got a chance to be a big impact guy and with the accomplished players around him taking away attention, he’ll have a lot of opportunity to shine. He looked good over the summer with ND Phenom, so he’s intriguing.
QUESTION: Can the offense be better?
For the success the Sabers had, their offense was, at times, bad. They turned the ball over more than 16 times per game and had a negative assist/turnover ratio. They didn’t shoot the ball particularly well as a team either. Despite those issues, they won 15 games. If guys like Nick Kupfer and Keagen Woodbury along with Ben Patton can raise their offensive games, this team could contend in the WDA.
OUTLOOK
Bismarck Legacy started last season 7-1, fizzled a bit late in conference play, then won three games in the WDA tournament before winning a game at state. The Sabers have a lot of young talent and experienced pieces set to return, which could add up to a contending club.
