Continue ReadingThe Beulah Miners were supposed to rebuilding last year. But the program’s coaching and talent depth shined through as the Miners won 20 games and reached the state tournament again despite seeing massive amounts of roster turnover. Defense was a strength as the Miners were one of the five best defenses in Class B. With two all-region caliber starters back, Beulah will once again be among the best teams in the state.
GO-TO GUY: Trey Brandt
Brandt was one of the best guards in the state last year as just a freshman, averaging nearly 11 points and four assists. He was very good in a second/third scoring role last year as Chad Morsette emerged as a legitimate go-to guy. Now it’s his time to take the reins and given his skill level and basketball IQ, the Miners should feel good about putting the ball in his hands and letting him control the game.
BREAKOUT CANDIDATE: Carson Weigum
With just two big minute guys back in the fold, there will be a lot of opportunity for breakouts from the rest of the team. Carson Weigum did see spot minutes a year ago off the bench and he’ll ascend into a starting role with Shaye Yeager gone to graduation. At 6-foot-6, Weigum has the size, length and motor to be a productive guy inside and with Jonah Larson and Brandt drawing a lot of attention inside and outside, he’ll be a beneficiary.
QUESTION: How do the Miners replace Chad Morsette?
For as good as the Miners were, offense was a struggle at times. Chad Morsette emerged as one of the best scorers in Class B, averaging 17 points per game. He was a tough-shot taker and maker and a guy who could play on or off the ball. Replacing him will be no easy task and while Brandt will likely take on a bigger role, Beulah will need some unproven perimeter players to step up and provide shot-making.
OUTLOOK
Beulah has established itself as one of the best programs in North Dakota. The names consistently change but the results are generally consistent. With Brandt and big man Jonah Larson (12 points and 10 rebounds per game in 2018-19), the Miners have the point guard and center spots squared away better than just about anybody. Defense is a hallmark as well, which gives them a chance to sustain a great level of consistency.
