There are a number of players that will be donning new uniforms and making a big impact at their new locations this upcoming season. Here’s a look at some of them.
Ben Gregg, 2021 Clackamas
Gregg could have easily stayed at Columbia Christian but the tough decision was made by the 6-foot-8 forward and his family to attend his neighborhood school and play against 6A competition. There’s no question that Gregg will be up to the task and when we watched him play with the Cavs in June, he was not surprisingly just as dominant as we’ve seen him in other settings. The rising junior will have to continue to adjust to a new offense and teammates but there’s no question he will step right in and be a candidate for All-State if not league and state Player of the Year honors.
Damontae Burns, 2021 Clackamas
The Cavs also add Burns to the mix this upcoming season as the 6-foot-1 combo guard also makes the leap up in competition after playing at 5A Parkrose last year. Burns will see time in the starting lineup at both guard spots and his ability to shoot, score, and distribute will no doubt help Clackamas match up with the other outstanding backcourts in the Mt Hood Conference such as Barlow, Central Catholic, and Gresham.
Jack Chlumak, 2020 Lake Oswego
Chlumak joins Lake Oswego from Newberg where he was an all-league standout. The 6-foot-3 guard is a versatile player who can fit in at a number of different spots on both ends of the floor and head coach Marshall Cho will certainly use the rising senior in a variety of ways. The addition of Chlumak and his ability to run the point is also good insurance in the event that point guard Wayne McKinney eventually does decide to move to California.
Elijah Munyan, 2021 Gresham
Gresham has continued to make strides under head coach Erik Lyslo and the Gophers will be in prime contention to return to the playoffs in 2019-20 with the addition of Munyan, who comes in from Columbia Christian. The 6-foot-2 wing is one of the best athletes in the state and he will instantly be a starter and main offensive weapon for Gresham. Munyan, along with incoming freshman Esyah Pippa-White, will join forces with returning senior Ethan Abrahamson to give the Gophers plenty of perimeter firepower.
Cole Hardy, 2020 South Salem
One transfer from south of the PDX Metro area is Hardy, who comes to South Salem from Salem Academy along with new head coach Travis Brown. At 6-foot-3, Hardy adds size to the rebuilding/reloading Saxons and in June ball, he showed that he has the ability to shoot and score. Alongside returnee Trey Galbraith and newcomer Nick Zuro, Hardy proved himself as a reliable third scorer and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him average in double figures this upcoming season.
Bennett Giebels & Connor McLean, 2020 Mountainside
Mountainside is a program clearly on the move up and should be more competitive in the Metro League this season. A lot of it has to do with the fact they are adding some quality transfers in both Giebels and McClean, both of whom were starters last season at Beaverton and Southridge respectively. Both are a solid 6-foot-4/6-foot-5 and will be key guys up front for the Mustangs. Giebels adds muscle while McClean adds athleticism and both have the ability to knock down threes the way head coach Dustin Hewitt likes.
