Here are some of the top guards to watch in Class B
Devan Michels, Rugby
Rugby will go into the year ranked in the top-5 and Michels is the third stud in the Panthers’ three-headed attack. The senior guard averaged 12.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.4 steals last year and played with ND Attack Black over the summer. He’s a really solid guard who will set the tone on both ends of the floor.
Trey Brandt, Beulah
Brandt was rock-solid as a freshman helping Beulah get to the state tournament and he’s still got three years of varsity basketball yet to be played. It’s hard to keep things in perspective given he’ll be just a sophomore, but he’s got a chance to be one of the best guards in Class B regardless of class next year after averaging 11 points and better than four assists as a freshman.
Bradley Defender, St. John
St. John will be a sneaky tough team next winter and Defender is one of the best overall returning players in Class B. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 14.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range and 48 percent from the field. He’s the definition of solid.
Jessie White, White Shield
White Shield will contend for a spot in state out of Region 8 and White is going to be a big key in that effort. He’s one of the most explosive scorers in North Dakota, and averaged better than 16 points per game a year ago as just a sophomore. He’ll have the ball in his hands a ton this winter and could be one of the state’s leading scorers.
Bo Belquist, New Rockford/Sheyenne
The North Dakota football commit is also one of the top returning guards in Class B after helping lead the Rockets to the state tournament while averaging nearly 16 points per game as a junior. Belquist is tough on the defensive end and has the speed and athleticism to wreak havoc on opposing defenses breaking down defenders while also possessing the range to score from anywhere.
Lucas Schumacher, Linton/HMB
Schumacher is one of the best overall scorers in Class B and could be in the mix as one of the leading scorers in the state this upcoming year. He’s got great size on the wing, a ton of skill and the ability to score from all levels on the floor. Linton/HMB has a chance to be one of the contenders in Region 3 and if the Lions do, it’ll be because of Schumacher.
