There I got to see some of the best young players from the DFW area compete against one another. It’s an excellent way to measure talent. Despite the fact that this camp was loaded with guards from the class of 2022, a few of them still managed to separate themselves from their peers. Here’s three 2022 guards who showed out and proved that they were the best of the best.
Rylan GriffenRylan Griffen – 2022 6’5 SG (Nike Drive Nation E15) Richardson HS – Yes I am aware that he is listed on our site as a small forward. However, he enrolled in this event as a guard, therefore I am going to respect Rylan’s wishes to designate him as such. Furthermore, I wouldn’t have included him on this list if he didn’t display the ability to excel at the position. Griffen has all the necessary tools offensively to be a two guard at the next level. He has great size and athleticism, can score effectively off the ball as well as in isolation, and is consistent from behind the arc.
I saw him completely take over in the closing minutes of a game, sealing the victory for his team with a three followed by a dunk in transition. Additionally, the camp paired him with 2022 center Lee Dort, who is the 9th ranked player from the C/O 2022 on Prep Hoops Texas. It showed that Griffen can play alongside an elite level big man. Griffen may continue to play at forward for the remainder of his high school career. But he may prove to be better suited for the two spot once he reaches college.
Davion Sykes – 2022 6’2 G Duncanville HS – Sykes is the quintessential three and D guard. He has a beautiful jump shot. His release is pure, and he is automatic in catch and shoot situations when left open. He looked incredibly poised during his time at the camp. The kid just had an almost arrogant calmness to his game that reminds me a lot of Klay Thompson. He plays a lot like him too. He lets the game come to him.
Sykes shoots the three ball exceptionally well, but he also showed the ability to hit some pull up twos as well. I loved how he moved without the ball to find open shots for himself. However, Sykes defensive capabilities should not go overlooked. He is a lock down perimeter defender. I rarely saw him give up an easy bucket. He knows how to move his feet and does a good job of keeping his man in front of him at all times. Sykes capacity to be a contributing two-way player is what earned him a spot on this list.
Keyonte GeorgeKeyonte George – 2022 6’3 SG (Nike Drive Nation E15) Lewisville HS – George is another player who is no stranger to Prep Hoops Texas coverage. He is currently ranked 3rd in our 2022 rankings for the state of Texas, and now I know why. I immediately noticed that he plays smart basketball. He never settles and exploits mismatches when he has them. George shoots the three well, but I loved how he was always looking for an easier look inside. He possesses an excellent mid-range game as well.
It’s not uncommon to see top players dominate the ball in a camp atmosphere, but that wasn’t the case with George. I never saw him take a bad shot. That said, he still managed to be aggressive on the offensive end without constantly throwing up shots. Like I said, he can make the three, but I think he’s at his best when he is attacking the basket. George has already received offers from noteworthy power five programs, and his college offer list will certainly continue to grow in the coming years.
