One of my favorite things to do this month is make predictions for the upcoming HS season. With that being said, here are my 5A State Title Predictions:
Top 3 Contenders:
Millennium
Millennium has to be the early on favorite going into the high school season. They really didn’t lose anything from last year to this season. Their core players all return and all got better over summer, especially Justus Jackson and DaRon Holmes. With Gilbert losing their two star seniors, Millennium has to be looked at as the clear favorite.
Sunnyslope
Slope could definitely be a problem this year. They have a ton of size to match Millennium. Carson Basham, Grady Lewis, and now Elijah Saunders make up one of the best forward trios you’ll see all year. interested to see how their guard play holds up throughout the season as the team is primarily forward heavy.
Gilbert
Gilbert has lost their two top seniors/players but they still have more than enough fire power to compete. Jay Caserio has proved that he is one heck of a coach and he is bringing back a team that has done it before and is bought in. Griffin Lamb, Brycen Long, and Paul Maldanado know what it takes to win and know how to run their system flawlessly. Do not underestimate this team.
Sleeper:
Ironwood
I really think Ironwood’s window to win the title was last season, unfortunately it did not pan out. The team losses the little size they had. Ironwood has probably the best guard trio in the state with Dominic Gonzalez, Bailon Black, and JJ White. They are very well coached and get after it on defense. I think this is enough to put them as a title sleeper, the main thing I worry about is their size, especially when matched up against the three teams listed above.
