Continue ReadingLa Crescent has steadily improved each of the last few seasons. A key guy in the Lancers’ rise is Zach Todd.
Todd, a 6-foot-4 senior forward, averaged better than 15 points and six rebounds in his junior year, helping La Crescent win 21 games last season. He spent the grassroots season playing with MN Lightning.
“It went really well,” said Todd. “I think I made a lot of improvement playing more of a guard position. I play the four or five during school and AAU allowed me to back my game out and play more of the three or even the two.”
Todd is a bit of a tweener on the court. He’s a natural inside player at the high school level, using his strength, short-area quickness and physicality on the inside to produce a high rate. But he’s worked hard on expanding his game to play more on the perimeter where he’s probably better suited at the college level.
“It’s tough sometimes,” said Todd. “I’m so used to getting inside, making a move to a jump hook or taking it through people. It’s different as a guard. It’s a challenge but I’m enjoying the challenge. I’m not the best defender on shorter guys but my size allows me to stay in front and contest. This year in school I will have to be trusted to guard big guys and wings and I think I’ve made a lot of improvements with my quickness and stuff so hopefully that shows.”
Todd’s drawing interest from a number of schools and is planning on pursuing a degree in biology and pre-med.
“I’ve visited Gustavus and have plans to visit Eau Claire and River Falls,” said Todd. “I’ve really enjoyed talking with the coaches. All the campuses are beautiful. We’ll see. I think my game has improved a lot and I hope I can turn some heads maybe with a good season too.”
Aside from that, Todd said he’s looking forward to one more season of high school ball. And La Crescent has a solid class of seniors that has been around for a few years now. There’s a lot to be excited about.
“We’ve got a really good group of seniors that have played together since we were little,” said Todd. “We have some younger guys that we hope can step up. What we lost, I feel like we gain in experience. It should be a really fun season.”
