Recruiting Report: Milton Matthews (2020)
This time last year, Milton Matthews was a virtual unknown in most local recruiting circles. Fast-forward 12 months and he’s emerged as a primary target for many college coaches recruiting the 2020 class in this region. Coming off a season in which he drilled 84 threes, Matthews did more of the same on the grassroots circuit with DC Thunder and continued to thrive with his high school team at DMV Live.
The result? A significant uptick in recruitment. Matthews has received three offers to date: from St. Bonaventure, ETSU, and Quinnipiac. Other schools such as St. John’s, Rutgers and Texas A&M have reached out to show interest.
“My recruiting is going better than I expected. I never thought I would get the calls I’ve been getting,” Matthews said during a recent interview with Prep Hoops. “But I always remember that’s I have a lot of work to do. There is no limit to the game of basketball, so I try to get better every day. I’m comfortable with being uncomfortable, getting up in the morning, and building my craft as a player and a man.”
For those who haven’t seen Matthews play, he enjoys playing with pace. He can do several different things on both ends of the court including defend and rebound. Matthews prides himself on the intangibles he brings to the game.
“I love playing fast and making plays. I like doing a bit of everything because it keeps the game interesting. But one thing I could separate from the stat book is keeping great energy on the court,” he explained. “One thing that I do on the court is encourage my teammates. I try my best to install confidence in them so they would play to the best of their ability.”
Matthews mentioned that he’s worked hard to improve his ball-handling. His current area of focus is improving his physical strength.
“I’ve been studying the college game and paying attention to the physicality, so I’m working to have an edge before I get there.”
What can he bring to a college program?
“I’ll bring positive energy and leadership to the program. I’ll always have a “war zone” attitude in the gym, class room, weight room, and every aspect in being successful.”
