Everson, a junior forward, averaged better than 15 points and seven rebounds as a sophomore and spent the grassroots season with the Pentagon Schoolers based in Sioux Falls, where had a chance to showcase his game against excellent competition.
“It was a really good summer,” said Everson. “It was a bit of a lesser role than I’m used to but I think it’ll be good for my recruitment in the long run. I’m more assertive with my shot selection and playing more disciplined. I’d rather win with a lesser role than being a superstar and not winning. It was definitely running with those guys.”
Few guys in North Dakota have the combination of size, athleticism and talent as Everson. He’s 6-foot-7 and explosive. He moves like a guard and has the ability to defend guys smaller but he’s also got the strength and toughness to grind in the paint. He’s been a productive player already but his skillset continues to evolve as he’s improving his perimeter game.
“I try to get a couple workouts a day,” Everson said. “Weight room stuff, working on my athleticism, working on my ball handling and other things while also trying to get some runs with older guys in. I need to continue improving my on-ball defense. Transferring my athleticism to stopping the ball is a step I have to take. Other than that, a big one for me is my ball handling. I want to play on the wing or a guard at the college level. So getting my handle better is my biggest focus. Obviously my shooting too. “It’s my goal to elevate myself even further and do a lot of the little things I didn’t do last year.”
Everson is only going to be a junior, but he’s already drawing interest from colleges about playing at the next level.
“I’ve been in touch with a lot of coaches and gone to a lot of camps,” said Everson. “I think it’ll pick up in the next year. I’ll be visiting UND soon. I have to coordinate a visit with SDSU. NDSU has shown some interest. I’ve heard from Penn and Brown as well.”
