Many of these players are already household names on the National scene. After spending the grassroots season watching them compete, PH takes a look at where some of the top Nevada players landed in the rankings.
#13 Dashien Nix 6’5 PG Trinity Prep -This summer saw the Alaska native go from relatively unknown, to one of the top PG’s in the country. An elite passer with great size for the position, Nix has received comparisons to everyone from Lonzo Ball to Jason Kidd. Not sure which one he will end up being, but he’s a program changing PG with the ability to keep everyone involved. He will be taking his talents to UCLA next fall.
#40 Julian Strawther 6’6 SF Liberty – Strawther comes in at 40th on the national list. If not for nagging injuries during the summer, he could easily be higher. A three level scorer, Strawther posses the ability to dominate a game. He gets to the rim off the bounce, knocks down catch and shoots, and creates shots for himself. Strawther will be heading to Spokane to play for Mark Few and Gonzaga.
#63 Isaiah Cottrell 6’9 PF Bishop Gorman – I’ve been impressed with Cottrell from the first day he stepped on the court. The 3 time state champ is an elite rim protector and rebounder. He’s an unselfish team player, willing to do the dirty work. However that doesn’t mean that he’s incompetent on the offensive end. He has a nice post game, and finishes around the rim with both hands. The 6’9 4 man also utilizes a Dirk like one legged fall away to get his shot off over taller 5’s. Cottrell is headed to West Virginia to play for Bob Huggins next year.
#106 Noah Taitz 6’3 SG Bishop Gorman – Taitz may be the ultimate glue guy. Whether it’s at BG in the fall or Vegas Elite in the summer, all Taitz knows is winning. Because he’s known for his shooting, many of his other skills go overlooked. An above average athlete, and rebounder, he’s more than a standstill shooter. Taitz can put it on the deck and create a shot for himself. He’s also underrated as a defender. Taitz has the athletic ability and versatility to guard both back court spots. He recently released his top 5, which includes Washington, Stanford, SDSU, BYU and St Mary’s.
#164 Nick Blake 6’6 SG IMG Academy – Technically Nick Blake plays in Florida. However the former Durango standout will always be a Vegas boy to me. Blake is a 6’6 bull who overpowers guards and wings alike. Because of his ability to finish through contact, he may end up being the most college ready player on this list. He’s a three point threat, but also kills you in transition when he gets the opportunity to play downhill. After he completes his year at IMG, Blake will be back home to play for UNLV.
#170 Mwani Wilkinson 6’5 SF Bishop Gorman – Wilkinson is under rated IMO. The 6’5 forward is a freakish athlete with the ability to translate his run and jump ability into basketball plays. One of the most unique players in the class! Wilkinson is a defense first guy that can lock down multiple positions. Good at several things, but because of his athletic ability his skills are highly accentuated. Recently he narrowed his list to Vanderbilt, UNLV, Texas Tech, TCU and USC.
